I seriously doubt anyone can read all the way through this book without picking up 10 or 15 different pieces of information that could help you nail an interview, network like crazy, or land and negotiate job offers. However some people will benefit much more.It should be noted that this book is truly a playbook. Which I take to mean that you don't necessarily have to read back to front. It also means it covers a lot of ground and doesn't go into any one subject area too deeply (as many of the other reviews have noted) However, what I found in the book is that you could take any piece of a job search process starting with career choice all the way to job offer and find something that would give you specific steps to pursue and good solid how to advice.Ok so who's it not for:-It's definitely not for people who are out of touch with the modern world, In reading some of the other reviewers there seemed to be a lot of "same advice dressed up for newer times". It's clear to me that those people missed the subtleties that were in that "dressing". Much the same way that if I watched something that i know nothing about, like showing horses, it would just look like somebody parading horses around, but I'm very sure there's quite a bit going on there that I'm clueless about. People who aren't in tune with today will miss those subtleties, so don't waste your time if that is you.- It's also not for people looking to dive incredibly deep into one of these areas. It works well if you want to flip open a section and get immediate help in that area but not if you are the type of person who needs absolutely everthing spelled out for them in each area. You will have to figure some things out on your own (which for most people this is ok)-It's not for you if you have serious issues that make you unemployable (or less employable), seek out a counselor for those instead. It is for you if:-You're looking for a good solid playbook that has specific examples, exercises, to dos, checklists and other ways to make a difficult process much easier.- You are in your first 25 years of your career (could be helpful in the last 20 years too, but for sure on the front side it will save you a lot of time)- You are looking for a one stop reference guide for each step as you go along.- You are looking for solid advice, based on experience (i've personally used a lot of the stuff that this book talks about and gotten many jobs, promotions and job offers over other people that had more qualifications or experience)It's particularly good for you if you're in a professional (or want to be in a professional) environment or if you don't want to learn all this stuff yourself the hard way!Overall - Highly recommend, purely because $20 for this book is a deal when you count the number of things that you will put to use in a career search.

This book is going to change lives. I've been getting career advice from TheMuse.com for some time and this book is even more helpful than the site! It's super well organized and has really practical advice for how to create a stellar LinkedIn profile, how to utilize your network (even people you don't know that well), how to write the best resume and cover letter possible, and how to market yourself for the next stage in your career. You might think you're stuck doing what you're doing, or that nobody will want to hire you for your dream job, but with this advice it will be possible! It's a total game changer. I already know two people I'm going to give this as gifts. Anyone in your life who wants to move the next stage in their career, or wants to get more out of their career/change it would benefit from reading this book, no matter what stage of life they are in.

There was a lot of helpful information for job seekers in this book, but most of tips and advice I've read in other places online for free. Also, some advice, particularly the section on cover letters, contradicted what career coaches and other mentors told me. This book encourages you to be creative and share anecdotes which can lead to an extensive letter. Advice I was given was to keep it straightforward, concise and highlight achievements without rehashing the resume. The Muse probably has a more creative, startup feel than other companies, though, so they want cover letters that are more like storytelling. However, I found new information in the final two chapters of the book, which bumped my review up a star. You can also download copies of the worksheets if you have the Kindle edition. That's helpful. This may be a good compliment to "What Color is Your Parachute" if you prefer reading books to researching articles online.

This time of year, Dr. Seuss's perennial classic, "Oh, The Places You'll Go," flies off the shelves of bookstores (and Amazon shopping carts) as the go-to graduation gift for friends and relatives. For graduates who are preparing themselves to enter the work force, I couldn't think of a better gift than "The New Rules of Work," written by the co-founders of The Muse, Alexandra Cavoulacos and Kathryn Minshew. TheMuse.com is an invaluable resource for job seekers and those looking for career advice, and this book is a perfect extension of the site. Among its numerous virtues, readers learn how to use social media to their best advantage, in addition to expert guidance on crafting an impressive resume (yes, some of the old rules still apply, ditto for cover letters). But one of my favorite pieces of advice was how to look at yourself, determining your values and building your "personal brand." Like most endeavors, knowing first what you want helps in deciding where you are going, and by starting off "The New Rules of Work" with advice to look inward I think is very smart, and not something you see very often. If we are honest with ourselves and use the insights we've gained about what we value most, the trajectory is set for moving toward what we want in our jobs and careers. Oh, the places you'll go if you read "The New Rules of Work."

This book is brilliant - relevant, fresh, practical and fun to read. It has worksheets, tables, scripts - all of it! There is nothing like it on the market. In fact, the world has needed a goldmine in book form like this for YEARS. Read this for rockstar advice, inner clarity and the most premium career coaching on the planet, whatever your stage.

I have worked in the human capital space for over 20 years. The reality is the world of work has changed and this book provides a road map. If wish i had this book when i was starting out to help guide me to find the right fit, build important relationships and manage my career. I also think this book is helpful for anyone in the "people" space who need to attract and retain employees in this new world of work. We can all learn something from this book!
