Review

Land and sea are beautifully described, showcasing Stevens’s deep love for nature. Such details also bring into clarity how dangerous the mission was. Refreshingly honest anecdotes about mistakes, regrets, and difficulties show the human side of the risky undertaking. . . poetic in its approaches to the landscape but is also a factual account that teases out the unseen sides of discovering a shipwreck. From the Author

On a spring day in 1861, the Kad’yak set sail from Kodiak, Alaska, bound for San Francisco with a shipload of ice. Within a few miles from shore, it struck a rock, foundered, and was abandoned. But it didn’t sink. Now a wooden-hulled iceberg, it floated for four days before finally grounding on a reef in Icon Bay, on Spruce Island. That would have been the end of the story but for one detail. Captain Illarion Arkhimandritof, skipper of the Kad’yak, had promised to hold a service for Father Herman (now known as Saint Herman of the Russian Orthodox Church) before leaving Kodiak, but he did not keep his word. And the Kad’yak had somehow drifted through a maze of jagged reefs only to sink directly in front of Father Herman’s grave, with the top of the mast sticking out of the water, forming the Russian Orthodox cross―a public rebuke that would forever remind the captain of his perfidy and haunt the site for over a hundred years. In 2003, after years of painstaking research, I led a team of volunteer divers to discover the wreck of the Kad’yak. This is the story about the amazing history of the Kad’yak and how it sank carrying Alaska’s most important export for two decades in the mid-nineteenth century―ice. Through painstaking research of historical Russian documents and deep analysis of the complicated and confusing log of the skipper who surveyed the wreck site, this is a story of the incredible discovery of a shipwreck over 140 years old, and how I had found it with friends who later tried to claim the shipwreck for private salvage. It is a story about the personal, ethical, and legal struggles to keep the Kad’yak safely preserved for the Alaskan people and to illuminate its historical significance and linkage with Native Alaskan knowledge.A true tale of adventure in historical and modern-day Alaska told by a scientist who specializes in underwater research, the story ends with another tragic sinking of the Big Valley, the Bering Sea crab boat that served as dive tender and headquarters for the Kad’yak expedition, along with its captain and crew, in January 2005.Come with me, if only briefly, to a faraway place and time. To the real Alaska that is not that different from the imaginary one that lurks in our collective subconscious. Wild, snow-covered in winter, and emerald green in summer, Kodiak Island is central to this story. Approaching it from the fog, the Alaska’s Emerald Isle suddenly appears as the mists of time part to reveal verdant hillsides reaching up to snow-capped mountains.

The first and final chapters of THE SHIP, THE SAINT, AND THE SAILOR are the best parts of the book. The first chapter outlines how the ship, Kad'yak, came to be wrecked in the early spring of 1860 in Alaskan waters. The final chapter tells of the loss of a crab fishing boat in the winter of 2005, 145 years later than the Kad'yak wreck. Called Big Valley, it had played an important part of the search for the remains of the Kad'yak. All chapters in between the two are basically the memoirs of author, Bradley G. Stevens, a marine biologist who worked for many years for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Kodiak, Alaska while studying king crabs and other kinds of crabs sold on the commercial market.Stevens comes across as a totally affable fellow, one with whom a reader might sit over a cup of coffee or a beer and listen to his stories. He seems to be a passionate man with lots of interests: maritime history, shipwrecks, diving, local Alaskan culture and music, and the fisheries industry among others. He was not only active with his job, but active in the community of Kodiak (he now lives in Maryland), and while living there became seduced by the story of the wreck of the Kad'yak. The basic story is that Captain Arkhimandritov promised to honor Saint Herman on a visit to Kodiak Island. The promise was made to the wife of the Chief Administrator of the territories. She wanted him to go to Saint Herman's grave, say a prayer, and perhaps leave an offering. The Captain promised to do so, but broke his promise. As the story goes, his ship - the Kad'yak - was then wrecked, and sunk into the depths, although all men aboard were saved. Well over a century later, Bradley G. Stevens became obsessed with finding the wreck of the Kad'yak. Chapters two through twenty outline his interest in finding the Kad'yak, those he worked with to accomplish this task, and the long time it took for the project to come to fruition. If one is interested in diving and shipwrecks, Stevens' memoir will at least hold one's interest. However, despite its catchy title, THE SHIP, THE SAINT, AND THE SAILOR, seems to lack a lot of the drama of sea adventure and a lot of the methodical research of the usual maritime history book. As a memoir, however, it certainly conveys a man's passion and interest, and brings up interesting points regarding salvaging a shipwreck vs preserving it. Several of the men who started searching for the Kad'yak with Stevens decided they wanted to file a claim on the wreck, thus causing friction on the team, the rest of whose members were more into preserving and documenting the wreck rather than taking any possible gain from it. The odd part is that this is the main tension in the story, but about halfway through, Stevens allows those men to disappear from the narrative, leaving the reader wondering exactly how all those problems and conflicts were resolved.Stevens is a marine biologist, not a maritime historian. He did a fairly good job with his story, but it is definitely not a page turner. One simply meanders through his words, thinking that the man had good intentions, and feeling mildly happy for him that he was able to accomplish what he did. If the story of Captain Arkhimandritov had been woven throughout the narrative or if the fate of the Big Valley had been explored a bit more, Stevens' book might have been more readable. What stands out most, though, is how ethical Stevens is, and his words and actions certainly allow the reader to think about and analyze the ethics of maritime discovery.

Although technically nonfiction, this particular story contains a hint at karmic activity, with the possibility of a fateful shipwreck, due to an unappeased saint who had been passed up in prayer by a captain. From that fateful trip (and I can't help but hear the Gilligan's Island Theme Song playing in my head when I write that), we are taken to more present times via a research expedition, set out to uncover the truth of that fateful shipwreck, which turns out to be an Alaskan historical discovery. Add to that the fact that it was deemed the only known shipwreck associated with Russia in an eventual American territory. Since, as a side note, it is interesting to remember that the United States purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867.Along with the historical intrigue, I found it most interesting in reading the book that you are taken along on the journey in finding the shipwreck, and realizing along the way the trials and tribulations of said adventure. Raising the funds, researching the data, gathering dive crews, and experiencing yet again another perilous situation... that I don't want to give away in this review, but it is BIG.Not to compare this book and what the crew went through during their underwater research to a television show, but I couldn't help thinking about the Deadliest Catch television series while reading it for some reason. All in all, this is a great read. I could see it turned into a movie... it truly is that intriguing.Advance Copy Review

As a lawyer and (not particularly successful) author, I was especially interested in Mr. Khan's book. I was not disappointed. His prose radiates. Whether he is describing twilight ("the afternoon wore on until a bright azure above the courtyard changed to dusty cobalt edged with pink and orange") or his first glimpse of the Declaration of Independence ("I was like a lonesome islander who'd found a bottle washed up on a beach, a secret tucked inside that told of a wonderland."), his words linger with you. As soon as I finished reading An American Family, I wanted to start reading it again. It is a love story -- of his love for his parents and grandparents, his wife and children, and for his country, this country. He is the epitome of the American Dream. He studied hard in Pakistan, scrimped and saved to attend Harvard, graduated and started practicing law. When he writes of the loss of his son, Capt. Humayun Khan, who was killed in Iraq, his loss is palpable. Of his white marble headstone in Arlington, he writes "27 years reduced to 11 carved lines." But he also exhibits great pride in his son's service to the USA. He writes that his son was "destined for greatness, a king who would shine among the heavens. He was and I believe he does."He discusses his faith and traditions and culture, but he does not dwell on them. He is a patriotic American citizen and believes we cannot solve our problems by building walls and sowing division. He believes that we are all richer if we learn about and embrace our differences, be it color of skin, culture or traditions or religion.I have only known one Muslim well, a man named Nabil who has returned to his native country, Egypt. (Those who are afraid of immigrants need to get to know people like Nabil and Mr. Khan) He stirred an interest in Islam long ago and introduced me to the hadiths, the 'various reports describing the words, actions, or habits of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.' Are there those in predominantly Muslim countries who wish to harm? -- yes. But they are not the majority. Mr. Khan is a shining example of what many of the hadiths, which are similar to the Christian Beatitudes, teach us -- "None of you has faith until he loves for his brother or his neighbor what he loves for himself." This is much like the Golden Rule ... one we would all be better off trying to live by.

Khizr Khan's "An American Family: A Memoir of Hope and Sacrifice" is a poignant memoir that reaffirms the potential of the American dream. As most Americans first came to know Mr. Khan, I saw his memorable speech at the Democratic National Party's 2016 convention. However, this book explores many more themes than just that speech. From his humble beginnings in Pakistan, growing up as a poor farmer's son, to his dream to go to university and become a lawyer and finally his journey to the United States and becoming a citizen. Along the way, we learn of how Mr. Khan and his wife met and fell in love, raised three children, the one son giving his life in service of his country. A true immigrant's tale that will have you cheering him on as he is accepted to Harvard University, the next in tears when he learns of the death of his heroic son, who died protecting his fellow soldiers. This book doesn't care if you are a Republican, Democrat or Independent (I'm the third) and is filled with hope, determination and the author's deep and abiding patriotism for his adoptive homeland. Highly recommended.

What a beautiful and inspiring book. As I read of Khizr Khan's journey from his poor village in Pakistan to his arrival in America with almost no money in his pocket, I thought of my own family's story --my Great grandmother, impoverished, managing to escape from the Irish famine to a new life in America, my Grandmother coming from a life without hope in Italy, my grandfather from a destitute village in Wales. This book is representative of so many of our stories-- of poor, courageous, smart, gritty, determined people searching for hope and new beginnings in America. Mr. Khan--and my own family-- experienced racism, religious prejudice, and hate, yet it was dwarfed by the kindness and openness of many others --those that I think of as true Americans. Mr. and Mrs. Khan paid the ultimate price to be American when their son died in Iraq while saving his soldiers. I am sickened and revolted by Trump's attacks on the Khan family. Mrs. Khan, I want you to know that your silence spoke volumes about your grief. You are beautiful and strong and I thank you and your husband for your courage.

This powerful, uplifting memoir is a must-read for every American. Mr. Khan is famous for challenging then-presidential candidate Donald Trump to read and absorb the precepts of the US Constitution.Mr. Khan relates his journey from idealistic young student in politically-troubled Pakistan to patriotic American lawyer, activist and, sadly, Gold Star father. His writing is lyrical, gentle, witty, and deeply moving. His love for his beautiful, accomplished wife, Ghazala, and their three sons shines through every word. In simple, heartrending prose, he tells of their devastating loss of their middle son, Captain Humayun Khan, who died protecting his fellow soldiers and Iraqi citizens from a suicide bomber. From their loss, he and Ghazala havecreated a beautiful legacy of hope, honor, and deep devotion to this country. Despite the current atmosphere of intolerance towards immigrants and different cultures, they remain hopeful that justice and freedom will prevail.

This is one of the most inspiring books I have ever read. As a retired pastor, I believe I can say with no doubt whatsoever that God has blessed us all with the Kahn family. Their story reminds my why I love this country, and that we are a good people, a great people, no matter what the current presidential office-holder may have to say. He is not what this country is all about; the Kahn’s are, and so are we, if we have within us the same spirit that shines through them.

My only complaint is that the book wasn't longer. The art is brilliant, gestural but precise, dynamic, and intricate. There are so many hidden gems within each panel. As an artist, this book brings me joy beyond words.

I have been so excited for this book, ever since it was announced, and I was not disappointed. Even my son likes the pictures, though I had to hustle him past some of the visual puns, lol. I hop there will be a follow up!
