An ingenious map concept. An easy to read map nicely showing all the prime tourist highlights, view points, parks, etc. It’s very legible considering how much needs to be crammed into a small space. The outer cover is fairly durable laminated cardstock that will slip into a pocket easily. As some have noted the map that pops out is a bit delicate and won’t take rough handling. I’d give it a 5 star review except for the fact that the scale is presented as a ratio (1:13,000) rather than a linear scale in miles or kilometers. Not very handy when you’re trying to figure out walking distances.

I like the pop-up city maps, they fit in an open pocket of a purse for quick reference on the go. I have several for European cities: Barcelona, Madrid, Brussels. The Edinburgh map is disappointing, it has only a single map of the city center. It doesn't have a public transport map, detailed maps of other tourist areas such as the Leith port (Royal Britannia), and other areas. I will use the map, but it isn't as good as others in the series.

Now know why this map is cheaper. It’s only half the map all other pop out maps are. This only has a map of the city center area that includes the royal mile. Useful for that but wish it also had a bigger city version on the other side. Would have been useful to have a map that included the airport and Leith harbor area.

I loved this map, until I was actually in Edinburgh and the thing fell apart at all of the folding seams. The seams are perforated, which is great for tearing out sheets, but lousy for holding a folding pop out map together.

This was an amazing map to have. It had clear indications of which streets in the city were intersections with bridges and which went under the overpasses (important to know when walking through Edinburgh!) it is small enough to fit in a back pocket, purse, or backpack. Great value for the price!

Perfect size, has all you need to enjoy Edinbruh (say it that way!). I used it, son used it, Terry my friend borrowed it and loved it. I highly recommend this adorbs map.

I understand why this one is cheaper than the others, it contains half the information, but still, it's better than nothing.

After a recent talk by Karen Bussolini, this book’s photographer, I bought a paperback edition on the spot. I urge you to do the same if you plan to buy trees or shrubs for your garden.I’ve used the book almost daily for a month now and the title and subtitle are stated accurately. This book is “complete” and offers “essential” information for gardeners of all experience levels. Check out the Table of Contents, index and back cover for yourself with Amazon’s Look Inside tool. Information is organized into bite-sized topics, charts, and scores of lists, such as Trees and shrubs with unusual textures, Bark standouts, Colorful evergreens, Native plants that attract wildlife, Deer-resistant varieties, etc. This handbook explains how to evaluate your home landscape and growing conditions, select quality plants (with the Buyer’s Checklist on page 79), plant them correctly and care for them afterwards. The Trees and Shrubs A-Z section describes each plant’s essential details and landscape uses, which sometimes includes companion plant suggestions. “All about” sidebars provide overviews of popular choices, such as maples, hydrangeas, magnolias and rhododendrons.O’Sullivan’s friendly and frank writing style is akin to a chat with a trusted gardening mentor. You won’t feel as if you’re wading through a dry instruction manual. Bussolini’s photographs depict the book’s concepts with shots of landscapes that are achievable for this average gardener. Throughout, Bussolini’s photos beautifully showcase the 357 plants described. Her close-ups show unique plant features that lend multi-season interest to landscapes.I wanted to address two points raised in other reviews: 1) I’ve seen no evidence that “plants had misprints.” 2) Latin names are used instead of common plant names in most books for the sake of accuracy. Plants are known by a variety of common names, much like some people have nicknames. The Latin name assures gardeners they’ve found the right plant when they see the Latin name on a plant tag. A good example of this is the small tree with the Latin name Amelanchier. The tree’s common names include Shadbush, Shadblow, Serviceberry, Juneberry and Saskatoon, any one of which you may hear referenced depending on where you live.In summary, the combination of writing and photography raised my confidence and motivation to tackle an overdue landscape renovation. This was a purchase worthy of the limited space left on my gardening bookshelf.

While browsing through tree and shrub books at Barnes and Nobles, this one by far was the most complete. So good I had to have it and bought it on Amazon. Not only does it give you regular text book definitions of everything, the author gives her personal opinions and incites (in my case Red Maples), which is hard to find. For ex. what shrubs/trees will work in what soils and what trees might be more acceptable to disease, and so on. Don't expect to have a detailed page for every single tree out there, but it is still a great resource and should have what your looking for. My only complaint is the Glossary. If you look up "Red Oak", you'll probably find "please look up (scientific name)". Unfortunately most tree/plant book's Glossaries are like this, so I am not going to blame the author. Since the publication date is relatively recent, the pictures are pretty decent.

The best gardening books tend to be the ones in which the author is not afraid to be opinionated, and feels free to express affection or dislike of a plant, show a little personality, etc. This book fits that bill. I found the author's advice regarding techniques, landscape design, and plant selection to be practical and wise. The species references in the back of the book are quite detailed and the author has good tastes in plants. Wish more gardening books were this good.

This is one great book, full of a lot of pictures and suggestions, solutions to all your landscaping needs to create a beautiful well maintained, inviting yard that will be the an object of envious feeling of your neiborhood. This one book will help you plan, implement and accomplish your welcoming spot to all and showsthat you have taken the time to pursue through the use of this book as a starting point to a beatiful, well maintained paradise.

Concise info based on region, type of shrub,tree plant etc etc. would recommend to anyone just getting into landscaping. Will be using it a bunch this spring

I would line this book up against any other one for great content and completeness. If you are a botanist, you might prefer a more academic, scholarly, highly detailed book, but for avid gardeners, this one is superb. I have used it in the Master Gardener's program in my State.

I've had this book for several years and have given it away as gifts, too. The fudge (my favorite and standby is the 'bread and butter" recipe) is unbelievably good and THE best I've ever made or tasted. With that being said, I've still had flops occur that I cannot explain. Most frustrating is the fudge becoming grainy for no apparent reason. I thought I had narrowed down this problem to sugar: unless the bag says "pure cane sugar" it can have a mixture of beet sugar in it. Who knew? However, if you notice the date of my post (Christmas time) I've had yet another double batch turn grainy on me. Have no idea why, so I guess it's time to reread the book. I use a digital thermometer to keep a close eye on temperature, no to low humidity, fresh ingredients....Unlike other posts, I don't find fudge easy to make. I find it incredibly temperamental and sometimes (like today) hair-pulling frustrating. I seriously don't know how the author suffered through 300+ failures. It's why I don't blame the recipes of this book. When it's right, it's fantastic-can't-be-better. But there are MANY outside factors that can jack up a batch.....I'm still giving it a 5 star rating because even though I have maybe a 70% success rate (MUCH better than my fly-fishing record) when this candy comes out right, it is addictively delicious. When it fails, it's expensive as h#ll....oy.

The author is right on target with procedural instructions for successfully cooking fudge - even if you're cooking something other than the recipes provided.I couldn't find my well-worn original copy last Christmas, and immediately bought a second. Of course, about a month later found the original, and rather than lament having 2 copies, I'm glad to have a back-up!

I love fudge and had a terrible time making it until I bought this book. I was one of those who thought it had to be beaten fast and burned up numerous electric mixers doing so. This book taught me that you just need to stir lazily, and even walk away and give it a rest now and then! The author details out 10 steps to make perfect fudge and you don't even need a thermometer.I bought some penuche (brown sugar fudge) at a local shop and it was relatively tasteless. Made some using the recipe from this book last week and the first time, did not pay attention to what the book says about how to test for soft ball stage and used thermometer only, so overcooked it, then overcooled it also so I could barely stir it. What I ended up with was an utterly delicious, tender, brown sugar caramel! However the next two batches came out PERFECTLY, a firm yet melt-in-your-mouth fudge, and I doubled the recipe the third time. The flavor is rich brown sugar with a touch of molasses, rivalling See's brown sugar centers.I have also made the marshmallow in this book and I agree with the author, once you've had homemade marshmallow you'll never want those tasteless, chewy storebought things again. I plan to lay the marshmallow cut to size on 1/4 graham crackers and dip them in dark chocolate for s'mores bars, they should rival the Charlotte's Confections ones!Definitely worth the money for all the foolproof fudge, nougat, caramel, divinity, and marshmallow recipes.

This is a marvelous book! I've been making candy for 50 years, have a number of candy cookbooks, and have used many more from libraries. This is one of the best I've ever seen! It covers the gamut of candies from fondant and fudge through divinity, caramels and nougats. There's a lot of information in the front, but you can jump straight into the recipes and if you do just what she says, you'll have success. I don't know why I never got this before - maybe the cutesy title - but it is a well-researched and well-tested recipe book, one which makes a lot of less thorough books unnecessary. Benning provides numerous variations for the recipes, and myriad "fixes" for failed candy. I don't have words for how good it is! It looks unassuming but it's packed with serious info and marvelous recipes. You can't go wrong with this one!

Great book! Includes tons of great information on fudge making, including clear explanations of the candy making process, equipment needed, vintage recipes, how to fix problems and all the fudge recipes I'll ever need! Down to earth with an enjoyable style. It's like talking to a favorite aunt who knows everything about making fudge. Highly recommended.

Funny, charming, what can I say? Really love these. My two little ones get a kick out of these. The description from SLJ doesn't do it justice. These are GREAT, hard to find anything that can compare.4/30/2010 - Still love these. One of our favorites (probably mine) is Money From A Table. This is a slightly longer short story. So clever and FUNNY!!

Super stories brilliantly told - and I'm a school librarian!

I read from this book often to my pre-schoolers. Yes, it takes effort to explain and question them until they understand the plot of each story. But they love them so much we repeat each tale many times, until at the end of the school year, they are telling Hershel stories to me! The kid's favorites? The Gooses's Foot (because they relate to Hershel being a small boy) and The Candlesticks (because they like the part where Hershel says the candlesticks died.) Though they are much younger than the recomended age for this book, I have found over the last few years that not a single 4 or five year old has not enjoyed these stories. And without the pictures in most children's books, they are forced to imagine what Hershel, Yente, Rabbi Iseral, and Uncle Zalman look like. We've had nothing but fun with this one!
