A recent trip to Croatia, along with a visit to the Mount Srd war museum in Dubrovnik, compelled me to learn more about the brutal wars and twisted politics that accompanied the breakup of Yugoslavia and the simultaneous birth of several newly independent nations, Croatia included. There is surprisingly very little written on the subject; possibly because it is recent history (late 1980s, early 1990s), possibly because most Americans have never had much interest in the goings-on in the Balkans, even though support for Bosnia and Kosovo was a major point of contention during Bill Clinton's presidency.Fortunately, Laura Silber's book tells you everything you need to know about this turbulent era and the brutal ethnic wars that accompanied it. The Balkan countries have throughout history been a crossroads of cultures and a source of major conflict (i.e., World War I), a microcosm of the warring factions and religions that dominate world headlines today. The book focuses heavily on the rise of Slobodan Milosevic, who championed Serbian nationalism and is generally credited (or discredited) with exacerbating the deep-seated hatreds that led to all-out war.The backstabbing, lies, propaganda, and incredibly interwoven and complicated politics of the nations and the peoples involved boggle the mind; due to their complexity as well as to the foolishness of the "leaders" who fanned ancient ethnic hatreds. It is one of those "you can't make this stuff up" scenarios. Fortunately, the author does a superb job of untangling the maze of people and events, presenting events, power struggles and under-the-table motivations in a logical and relatively easy-to-follow fashion.This is not a casual read, and anyone with no interest in or connection to the Balkan nations would more than likely have little interest in the topic. If, however, you are curious about what happened in this area that has been a powder keg for centuries, and how one of the most brutal wars of the 20th century--albeit one of the least understood or little-known--there is no better, straightforward and accurate source on the subject that I have found. Highly recommended if you have any connection to or interest in the new nations that used to comprise Yugoslavia.

This is a fantastic book. Prior to traveling to the region, I read about 8 books around this subject. This was the best. Excellent depth and detail on the causes of Yugoslavia's collapse. My only caution would be for people who may not want as much detail on the characters and story leading up to the war. Personally, it gave me just the right amount of perspective. There is also an excellent BBC documentary series that goes along with this book. It features many of the very actors in the book, including Milosevic and more.

This was a difficult read for me as it is written in the language of the academic; dull, boring, and detailed. It did answer my questions about how it happened, and what it looked like. I also wanted to know if the events that led to the fragmentation of Yugoslavia had any comparison to current political events in the United States. I found many similarities, in my opinion.It seemed to me to be a textbook example of ambitious men who put their own personal power ahead of what is good for their country.

I have more than a half dozen books on the Balkans and its civil war, but this breaks down the step-by-step happenings and intrigues. It added so much to my understanding of how the civil war was orchestrated and then allowed to continue for so long.

Probably the best account of what exactly happened in Bosnia, and how the whole thing started (not just Bosnia, but Kosovo and Croatia as well). Authors go into extensive detail, providing the reader with a solid background to the war(s). While I was intimately familiar with the conflicts, or so I thought, this book shed some much needed light on some of the doubts I had, some confusing contradictions I picked up through the media, etc. The book, contrary to what some people are saying here, is not biased at all. That one side is portrayed in an "evil" tone is merely a result of what that "side" did during the conflicts, as documented by thousands of media outlets, historians, cameras and photographs. Of course, no one is an angel, but that should not diminish the fact that - there are demons and then there are DEMONS. Or whatever the daily word for evil, bad, ruthless people is.The book is thoroughly researched with a lot of important and verifiable information. It focuses on Croatia and Bosnia, mostly in Bosnia. It is the most accurate account that I've encountered yet; written in a clear and harmonious way. Did not get bored for one second, even though most of the information was not new to me. But what was new to me was certainly worth the wait.

This book is an outstanding account of the political, cultural, and ethnic factors behind the meltdown and genocide in Yugoslavia between 1991-1995. If you are not familiar with the conflict, this work may be a bit dense as an introduction. However, if you are familiar with the basic Serb-Croat, and Bosnia-Muslim differences, this book will spell out in very exact detail many of the key events that led to the conflict there. It may refresh your memory and give you new insights. Offering a rich blend of history and current events, Silber and Little have produced a work of lasting value to anyone interested in those terrible years. It also makes one reflect, in a way yet unanswered, as to how people can plunge to such terrible depth of barbarity, yet also hopeful that the "ethnic cleansing" was ultimately brought to a halt.

The authors have traced the break up of Yugoslavia in exhaustive detail. There is a 9 page list of characters involved, including presidents, chief's of staff, military leaders, leaders from the EC and UN. etc. Necessary unless one has a better memory than I for Yugoslave names. They trace the scheming of Slobodan Milosevic to build an independent Serbia. The duplicity is chilling. As journalists they quote sources, so documentation for their comments is excellent. Because of the detail, it is not an easy read, but if one wants to trace the development of the conflict and its sad outcome, this is your book.

Most importantly, This book is true to form cursive letters and not some randomly generated computer font! I’m noting that because I did order and return other books for that reason.The BONUS = is That it incorporates part of American History with the addition of writing sentences/paragraphs of the Constitution - in cursive! What a great way to write and read cursive as well as gaining insight ! Be diligent, Patriots!

My 13 yr. old student is enjoying this handwriting book. The incremental instruction is good for people who have already had an intro to cursive but are not proficient at it. We're using at a history credit also. Homeschoolers love killing two birds with one stone.

For whatever reason they are no longer teaching cursive in schools and I purchased this book for my 15 year old who is a bit delayed (he is on the spectrum) so he was a bit intimidated by the book and as a grown woman I to would have been slightly intimidated. Overall, I think it is a good book but would not purchase if your child is delayed in any way. ALSO, when I purchased this book I accidentally purchased it twice (I do not know if it was my mistake or amazon system) so when I received the book again a few days later I immediately put in for a return and explained what happened. For the second time (first time was a defective product) I was required to pay return shipping charges which amounted close to the amount of the book itself so I kept it and it is collecting dust. So careful when purchasing.

I received these today and was absolutely thrilled with them. They are the best cursive books I’ve found, too date, for homeschooling. There is plenty of reinforcing/ tracing of letters for those students who’ve gotten a little sloppy, and the constitutional paragraphs are complex enough where your teens will be challenged. Bonus: They get real time knowledge of the constitution. What’s not to love? 😁

1. Book submitted and received in excellent condition.2. Fun, good writing and leaning starter.3. I liked the words/sight words chosen - example – Kayak, me, my, make4. Blank Practice pages at the back. \ I suggest, photocopying the pages for the child’s practice sessions - practice makes perfect. (If the child does not write in it, you can pass on to another child)5. I believe this can also help Parents organize their own practice test- please note - there is no number tracing practice..When I bought the first one, I was comfortable and purchased another.

Very helpful and it works. My first graders like this approach to writing numbers.

Use a pencil, great to use with beginners or even just to sharpen penmanship. Additonal activities in the back.

My 3 year old didn’t like it as much! Holding on to them for a little while longer. Maybe he will like them when he’s 4 years old.

A 2yr old is not coordinated enough for this. Ages 3-5 is probably appropriate.

Numbers are just the right size for my granddaughter to see and trace. I recommend this to anyone wanting to help their kids or grandkids learn

Bought these for my 5 yr old grandson. He loves them. He gets then out on his own. No trouble getting him to use them.
