My rating for this book consists of 4 stars for message and 1 star for quality.I did enjoy the simple, clear approach which formed the backbone of the content: take your t-shirt and jeans and then add a layering piece, something at your neck, and something at your wrist. It's a simple formula but a great reminder for those of us feeling a little blah in our daily outfits. I liked that pieces were repeated in different looks (nobody wants to own thirty sweaters, after all), although the shoe/bag section could have been a bit more inspiring. And some of the clothing featured looked a little, well, tired. However, the quality of the paperback edition really lets it down. This is a self-published book and I was horrified at how sloppy the author (and/or her team) was. Problems include:- Photos are poor quality (this can often be a problem for indies and to some extent, I can overlook this).- Images and text run over each other. I realize e-books are tricky to format but in a paperback the author has control and there is no excuse.- Multiple typos which any friend with a half-decent eye could have spotted, never mind a proofreader. (Example: "What you wear effects how you feel about yourself & how others threat you" -sic.)- Fonts are inconsistent; page numbers appear in front matter and scream "amateur effort".- At least one caption was just plain wrong, while another ended mid-sentence.- On one page, two entire paragraphs were repeated. To be honest, as a reader, I feel offended the author was willing to take my money without doing me the courtesy of even some basic quality control. As an indie author myself, I'm dismayed and humiliated to be associated with this level of output. The theme and message of this book are worthwhile and I would love to see it land a traditional deal to do a decent job of production. It would make a highly appealing purchase if done properly.
Very mediocre little book from someone who thinks so highly of herself. Tsk. Written simply (its only virtue) with recommendations that are so generic and obvious as to be laughable. To paraphrase: "Add a bag ... scarf ... jewelry ... a bag," etc. Duh. Best suited for preteens and very young teens who might need a few suggestions to spice up their jeans and T-shirt look.
Let me summarize - t-shirts and jeans are great wardrobe staples. Buy new, don't wear something that doesn't fit. Dress up with quality accessories. The end. I read the whole book in about five minutes, it has no new information, and certainly nothing one cannot find for free on the blogosphere. Waste of money.
I think this author has some nice advice for people who aren't used to using interesting accessories to dress up their clothes. Let's face it, in the US half the time people just throw on jeans and an old "I ran a 5k" t-shirt and call it a day. This shows that the same basics, jeans and a (nice quality) tee can be stylish and chic. It's nice to see that all laid out and I'm sure some people would benefit from it (albeit not those who are likely to seek out a book on fashion). But good Lord, the editing! This author should *not* have self-published a book, or should at least run a spell check. The number of times she wrote "knecklace," "chocker," and "braclet" is dizzying. Then we can get into misplaced apostrophes (I'm looking at you page 87, with the title "Ring's"), "blazed" instead of "blazer," and on page 20, "Navy and white stiped." That's it. You can figure out that she meant "striped," but a navy and white striped what? From the same list, I should buy a "cropped sequined."And the parts that affect readability - she clearly intended to have captions under the pictures, but then decided to put all the outfit descriptions on the same page before the photos. Okay, that could work. But then the captions say, when discussing different shades of red, "[you might like] a bluish red, like this jacket" on a page full of text. This happens repeatedly, and it's quite distracting, not to mention at times she clearly changed the clothing in the photos but never updated the captions. But, the writing really isn't the point of a book that is just about photos of clothes, so I suppose that doesn't matter? I feel this really could have risen to be a great style guide, but falls flat.
I got the original Tshirt and Jeans Handbook several years ago, when it was only an e-book. Back then I wished it was offered as a paper copy also. This one is revised copy and also offered as paper copy. I grabbed this one for my kindle and ordered the paper copy also, because the original concept resonates well with my style. However, the E-book is fine, but the paper copy has smallish pictures and my copy was somewhat blurred on some pictures. I thought it could have been done better. The E-book is less money and I kept that, cause it is updated and expanded on from the original.
As a stylist myself, I thought there was a good basic information here. I would have liked a little more information on WHY she chose what she chose what she chose and how the choices affect particular body types. Also, there were a considerable amount of typos. But, for someone who is a novice to fashion and style, I would definitely recommend this book.
This was a great visual book with ideas for casual stylish dressing. The authors did a fantastic job showing how a top and jeans could be taken to the next (comfortable) level just by adding a jacket, a scarf, belt or necklace. For those of us who live mostly casual lifestyles, this was full of great ideas! All items are pretty easily found, many within a small budget.
For non-style savvy people like me, who want to look good but have nary a clue how to go about doing that, this book is awesome. The advice is practical and easy to follow, and nothing beats those wonderful pictures of put together outfits. I highly recommend this book, but it should be read on a screen that lets you see the colors (much more helpful that way).
