I am a big fan of Tom Tierney's books. This one has a lot of background in it as well as the fashions of that period. He draws both male and female and always writes a little paragraph or two about the clothing depicted. They are great coloring books to daydream while your coloring and picturing yourself in the very same gown in your favorite color.

I would have given this book a 5 star review for the lovely detailed drawings of the fashions of the Old South. I bought this as a gift for my mother. But I didn't feel I could because the art is printed on both sides of the page. Even though the paper is a nice quality, any use of markers or watercolor will bleed through to the other picture on the back side. So, in order to let my 76 yo mother use all of her art supplies to fully enjoy this book, which I know she will, I have to copy at least the back side pictures onto another sheet, and may have to just do them all to make sure she doesn't get confused by it. Too bad, really. Next time, print one drawing per sheet and you'll have 5 stars from me! I would have paid $1 more, which many of the single sided books are selling around $5 - $6 on sale, to get this feature.

Paper was not very good for coloring. The markers I used came through on other side and messed other side up. I finally put it away and started on another adult coloring book.

Was disappointed with all of the one's like this one because there's pictures on both sides of the paper and I like to do mine in Gel pens and markers and you can't on these because they bleed through and I don't like to use pencils that much!😩😩😩😩😩

This book is a good book for people who love history, fashion and coloring, which I do!! I my con would be that it's printed on both sides of the paper, so if you want to frame one picture you lose the back side. Also, if you press too hard it comes through on other side! Still, I'm am enjoying it!

The Qur’an and its Biblical Reflexes soundly refutes this idea.Durie demonstrates, through an innovative and thorough linguistic and theological analysis of the Qur’an, that the Quranic understanding of God, of prophethood, of justice, of covenant, of sin, of the fall of Adam, and so on, owe nothing at all to the biblical tradition preserved in Judaism and Christianity. On all these topics, and more, the Qur’an has creatively come up with a new and unique set of ideas that bear no relationship to those of the Biblical world and its teachings. We can only speak accurately of two Abrahamic religions, and of Islam, which unsuccessfully claims to be inherited from their thought world and values. There are only two Abrahamic religions, not three.Durie’s study take the innovative step of analyzing the progression of ideas in the Qur’an without any reference to the Muslim biography of Muhammad (the Sira) that provide the contexts for understanding of the Qur’an in light of the timeline of Muhammad’s life as a messenger, from 610-632 C.E. In my own teaching of the Qur’an I have understood the development in the thinking of the Qur’an’s messenger by reading the surahs of the Qur’an in the context of the Messenger’s life and career. Such a reading is standard practice in Quranic studies, by both Muslims and non-Muslims.Given what Durie believes to be compelling evidence that the historical value of the biography of Muhammad must be seriously questioned, he proceeds to layout a developmental sequence in the surahs based purely on his analysis of the actual texts of the Qur’an and what they reference and the telling phrases and words that appear at various places in the development of the Messenger’s thinking within the Qur’an. Nevertheless, it appears to me that the timeline that Durie arrives at through linguistic analysis of the Arabic text, for the developmental sequence of the surahs, correlates quite closely with the timeline that the Sira suggests.A few final observations and comments:1. Even though Durie analyzes the Arabic text of the Qur’an throughout, his use of transliteration makes his entire analysis accessible to non-Arabic speakers. This means that non-Arabic fluent readers can follow and wrestle with his argument without any difficulty. In fact, given the complexity of the material that Durie is handling, this book is remarkably readable!2. It is my hope that all Christians who are working among Muslims will take the time to read this analysis. While I expect that few will agree with every single point of his analysis, we must all honestly grapple with the rigor of Durie’s analysis and the compelling nature of his conclusions.3. It is my hope that Muslim Quranic scholars and educated English-speaking Muslims will read this book. With gentle, careful and penetrating analysis, Durie challenges many “sacred” beliefs about where the Qur’an originates from. May this book soon be translated into Arabic!4. This work is truly ground breaking. I hope that this book will lead to a plethora of future studies of the Qur’an, and of its relationship to the Jewish and Christian Scriptures, that will illuminate and expose much that has passed for accepted truth in both Quranic studies and in Islamic studies more generally.5. From now on, anyone researching the meaning and origins of the Qur’an will have to deal with Durie’s ground-breaking analysis.

This was just gearing up be a good story when the book ended. The main characters were finally becoming developed (secondary characters, tbd?), and we knew a bit about their capabilities and inclinations. The plot was just laying out nicely and a nascent plan was falling into place. I was just thinking, ah, now we're finally done with the preliminaries. I might like this after all ... let the story roll! Then I flipped the next page in my e-reader -- and there was nothing more! I felt, well, let down. I like series, but I don't like serials.

I enjoyed the world building, the writing was excellent, and the premise initially seemed interesting, but ultimately this series might not be for me. At this point it's a tired trope to see the heroine surrounded by weak, ineffectual friends and relatives. She has a lazy brother who uses ill health to avoid supporting the family. She goes about trying to save a naive, feckless father who seems to provide more trouble than support. And her hardworking mother is left to simper in the background. Even the heroine's fiance is prone towards obsessing over writing errors for hours (I kid you not).It's too depressing. I'm tired of reading about the same overly powerful but somehow ignored heroine over and over again.

The reasons I couldn't give this book a 5 are few but important to me. I have to say that I like the main character but I don appreciate how she is allowing herself to be manipulated. She is blessedly more perceptive then you find most female leads but still far more yielding and self illusion then I would like( I have a hope this is so we the readers will underestimate her and it wont be so in later books). The second issue can be chalked up to it being a short novel so I don't really hold it against the story but the magic system and its capabilities wasn't explained very well. Lastly I hate the idea of romance. This novel is great because there is not any romance but ill cry if later books have her acting like a love struck teen especially when she is already by choice engaged.

Thoroughly enjoyed this! Charlotte has hidden her magical abilities for years (Service as a magus is compulsory, and magi can't marry.) But when the family's financial woes grow dire, she steps up and helps her brother fake abilities greater than he has to get him enrolled as a magus. Of course, things don't work out as she might wish, and she's soon embroiled in late-night escapades and shady dealings. The Victorian-esque setting is a lot of fun. I'm really looking forward to the second installment and seeing where Charlotte's journey takes her.

I found her through Gail Carriger's review and suggestion. I found myself breezing through this novel and it looks promising for the start of a new series. It is a brief read, light and just barely getting into the world. I found myself interested in the heroines plight and read it til I finished. Hope to read the next in the series soon!

First book in a new series and setting by Emma Newman, with echoes of the Parasol Protectorate series and a touch of Sherlock Holmes. While the first 2/3 of the book is all about characters and the wonderful setting, the last part delivered on quite a bit of plot and action.All in all a delightful page turner, a great adventure, but hopefully not our last journey into Industrial Magic.

The author captures the era well, and the cadence of the people of the time is spot on. One can easily image the best and brightest of the BBC making this a smashing production.

It reads more like the first part of a novel, rather than a stand-alone novella. The characters are engaging, the world-building is interesting, but then it just.....stops.

The Aftermath by Rhidian Brook depicts a time and place not often depicted in literature: post-WWII Germany–specifically, Hamburg in 1946. The Aftermath tells the story of a British officer, his wife, and their young son sharing a requisitioned home with a German man and his teenaged daughter. This situation proves ripe for drama and clashing relationships and tensions, and Brook delivers. A note at the back of the book explains that the author got the idea from his Grandfather who hared a house with a German family after the war, which from what I understand, was certainly not the norm.English couple Lewis and Rachael are distanced after the war, Lewis rather hung up on the idea of Rachael, and Rachael suffering from most likely a form of PTSD after the loss of someone close (I won’t say who due to spoilers). Lewis and Rachael are almost foils to each other: Lewis holds everything in while Rachael lets everything out despite her best efforts at the typical English stiff upper lip. Their son, Edmund, on the other hand, is relatively upbeat and curious despite the impacts of the war and witnessing the devastation of post-war Germany. Orphans of all ages run free in hodge-podge found clothes, scavenging food and belongings, squatting in abandoned homes, and desperately seeking prized cigarettes or food from the British soldiers. The orphans engage in a type of black market trade, with cigarettes being the main currency, and Edmund getting caught up in the plight of the Orphans.Brook offers brief vignettes of the German family, Stefan and Freda, but I found their characters thinly painted. More time seems to have been spent fleshing out the English family. I would have liked to have gotten to know Stefan and Freda much more than Brook offered.The Aftermath, at times, falls into the trope of the emotionally frozen marriage and the subsequent actions of husband and wife; one party inevitably being “awakened” by adultery. I won’t speak too much on that subject given the spoiler-territory, but I will say that while that aspect was enjoyable to read, it was predictable.I found myself distracted by the author’s thesaurus-happy tendencies, perhaps because I don’t like writing that tries to elevate itself by posh language rather than theme at the risk of becoming pretentious. Maybe that’s just my egalitarian outlook in general, although I do obviously understand the importance of people learning new words from reading.My main issue with The Aftermath is that is seems to be an incomplete book. The ending was quite abrupt and although there is allusion to closure, I felt there was no closure for any of the characters, which was very unsatisfying.

Quite good. Deals with a much misunderstood time and place in history, Germany after WWII. There's been a lot of history written about this lately that dispels the myths surrounding that time period, i.e. that the allied occupation of Germany was a benign undertaking. In fact, it was very brutal and millions of civilians suffered or lost their lives as a result. The notion of victor's justice and collective guilt were very much in evidence, as this book demonstrates. The prevailing mindset at the time seems to have been, "Well, you've slaughtered our innocent civilians so now it's our turn to do the same to yours!" It took several years for more reasonable minds(Hoover, Marshall, et. al.) to prevail.The Brits, to their credit and despite a shocking lack of funds, were probably the best of the occupiers. The Russians and the French were deplorable, the Americans little better. The protagonist in this story, a fundamentally decent British colonel named Lewis Morgan, demonstrates that humanity in very difficult circumstances, specifically by sharing a house requisitioned by the occupation authorities with its German owner and his daughter, something very unusual at the time. The story renders the characters as complex and basically sympathetic, conflicted and suffering in turn. There are echoes of Golding's "Lord of the Flies" with the trummerkinder and their "beast", the flies swarming the rubble and their juvenile hierarchy.Actually, I would have given this four and a half stars. The missing half star? Well the story is a little too neat, to my thinking, and it could have and maybe should have had a much darker ending. But, I guess we live in a feel good age, don't we? Also, there are some odd locutions in it. "Diffuse" is simply a mistake or a kindle mis-transcription for "defuse", also "callow", "murder"(a "murder of crows"?!), and "strip"(although I found a British definition for that in the OED). Briticisms? Well, the author is British and well-educated (I assume) so perhaps.Notwithstanding those quibbles, a very good read, highly recommended

I read this book because I had seen the trailer for the upcoming movie with Keira knightly. I am not sure the some of the characters were developed as much as the could have been and the ending just left the reader hanging

A moving tale of a British military officer who is assigned to Hamburg, Germany in 1946, immediately following the end of World War II. Colonel Lewis Morgan is allowed to resettle his family -- wife Rachael and son Edmund -- into a home requisitioned from a German family. When Lewis realizes that the owner, a widower and his teen daughter, will be put out, and sees that the home is more than spacious enough to house both families, he proposes a most unusual arrangement -- that the British and German families share the home. Thus the scene is set for a compelling look at all the horrors suffered on both sides and the painful process of picking up the pieces. While this story does not sugar coat the evils perpetrated by the Germans, it does serve to show a human side to those Germans who were caught in the middle, without minimizing the emotional toll the war took on the British. I enjoyed this book and would heartily recommend it.

this is an excellent book that i read for a book club that i would not have chosen myself and that's one of the benefits of book groups is that you read things you might ordinarily not choose to read by yourself. i had never considered how Germany might have struggled pulling itself together after the war. the story well documents the lives of several storytellers so that you get a real understanding how difficult it was for them.
