An absolute classic, sustained through the ages and still loved by children today. I loved this book as a little child, about age 3 or 4 when I first read it, in the early 80s. I am Deaf, and my Deaf professor and his daughter, who is hard of hearing, also love this book. He read it to her when she was growing up, and by read, I assume he signed it to her in sign language. No one knew I was Deaf when I was 3, and I could not always tell what was going on, but this book is so beautifully illustrated, the faces on the characters are so expressive, and there is so much color and things to look at in the pictures that I imagine it is a reason that the book resonates with Deaf and Hard of Hearing children. I purchased this book on Amazon for my friend who recently had twin girls. I bought it for their first birthday. She has older children, 10 and 12, and they also love the book. I am not entirely sure why, but it seems to be a good book for children with different disabilities, and can be appreciated by many for its story as well as the illustrations.

I thought that 20 months might be too young for this book, but it's one of my favorites, so I got it for my son. He is old enough to find the book hilarious, and he will occasionally get out of the bathtub without crying if I preface it by reciting the last part of the book.I'm not saying that this is a baby book; the pictures are amazing, and the story is funny. I read it to my 3rd-5th graders, and they love it. Honestly, you could spend 20 minutes looking at each page, and still miss some cool detail. Don and Audrey Wood are among my favorite children's author/illustrators, and their books deserve a place alongside your Maurice Sendak and Mo Willems books.

I typically read a few of the low reviews and a few of the high reviews. We had this book 25 years ago when our kids were growing up. I was invited to a book baby shower and I immediately thought of this. One of the reviews here was particularly critical of the juvenile plot! So note...this is a kids book...not a Pulitzer Prize adult book. But it does have an adult sized underlying message....don't let common sense and doing the right thing stand in your way of questioning authority. I won't ruin the plot....gotta buy this one.

Children enjoy the ridiculous, and an authority figure who won't get out of a bathtub is certainly that. Like many picture books, Don and Audrey Wood's whimsically illustrated "King Bidgood's in the Bathtub" is geared toward 4-8-year-olds but would appeal to the love for the absurd that resides in readers of all ages.A major theme of King Bidgood is that the solution to what seems like an impossible problem is often quite simple and can be solved by a mere child. The young page in this story enlists the help of all his "betters"--a knight, a queen, a duke, and the entire court--to get the king out of the bathtub, but in the end, he (a simple servant boy) outwits them all. While the others invent elaborate needs that the king must attend to--battles, feasts, fishing, and dancing--the page simply pulls the plug.Much of the book's humor lies in the characterization of the king and his court. Rather than get out of the tub or reject the court's expressed needs, the king tries to satisfy the needs while remaining where he's at. He gladly welcomes the knight to battle in his tub, the queen to feast in his tub, the duke to fish in his tub, and--to every child's delight--the entire court to dance in his tub. These are feats that can only be accomplished through pure, fun-loving imagination on the part of the illustrator and the readers. As the book progresses, the court's facial responses are grossly exaggerated, their expressions of amazement and dismay heightening. And when the court fail in their attempts, they try to preserve their dignity, however wet and bedraggled they may be. The king, on the other hand, is completely at ease until the very end of the book, when suddenly the page adopts a look of immense satisfaction and pulls the bathtub plug, and the king is left astonished and fumbling for a towel. In addition to providing humor and developing characters, the illustrations provide a rhythmic framework of light for the plot, alternating between the well-lit bathroom and the ever-changing quality of light in the castle hall, where the moon rises and falls. Within the general rhythmic framework of the illustrations lie fascinating details. The more one looks, the more one sees. The cake in the feast scene has a miniature king-in-bathtub figure on top; the knight in the battle scene accidentally leaves the bathroom with a tiny ship on the end of his scabbard . . . An observant reader will also notice that the chain to the bathtub plug is visible in every picture, as a foreshadowing of the solution. The text, also rhythmic, is unrhymed, but each time the king invites folks into his tub, his plea ends in a delightful three-word repetition: boom, boom, boom; yum, yum, yum; trout, trout, trout; and jig, jig, jig. In the end, though, the king is stunned into silence, and the last repetition--or last laugh, you might say--is not his own, but the tub's: glub, glub, glub. The book will leave children clamoring for more, and Don and Audrey Wood have plenty of others that will satisfy, including the award-winning "The Napping House," which has in common with King Bidgood a delightful brand of visual slapstick distinctive to the Woods. Both books would make an excellent addition to any child's or classroom's library.

My kids love this book so much, we had to buy a second so they each can have a copy. We also bought one for the class book exchange. The other child loves it too. We have so much fun making silly voices for each of the characters and talking about the details we find in the pictures.

The illustrations in this book are amazing. Be prepared your family will want to read this every night. I also got the napping house. I have to recommend that one as well. And the ryhming in the story is so easy to remember don't be surprised if by the 3 read your kids are reading along with you. Love Love Love this book

King Bidgood's in the Bathtub is a rollicking story of an unmannerly king. The marriage of the lyrical text with lush romantic illustrations in oil on pressed board lay bare the opulence of this self-indulgent monarch. The succulent double-page, full-bleed spreads revel in the grandeur of the idle rich and extend the text of this story in which a king refuses to exit his bath despite the best efforts of all at court only to be thwarted by his seemingly helpless page in a show of wit. Although young children will be mesmerized by the unadulterated beauty of this work, it is a rare opportunity to help high school students recapture the magic of poetry while teaching the mechanics of it including not only poetic and sound devices but also repetition, tercets and couplets, and the impact of structure.

My daughter was obsessed with this book when she was about 15-16 months old. We read it everyday and she liked to point out different things on each scene, e.g. fish, cake, fork etc. she’s now 17 months old. She still likes it a lot. The ending is clever.

With The Rebel Allocator, Taylor pulls off the improbable: page-turning fiction about capital allocation. It’s almost as if he has invented a new genre in the process. This readable, highly-quotable novel explores a rarified topic—capital allocation—through the eyes of Nick, a directionless college grad who is collapsing under a mountain of student loan and credit card debt. In a moment of desperation and panic, he accepts a junior analyst job at a bro-infested private equity firm. This small fork in the road sets into motion a story of self-discovery and personal transformation, with a good part of the action consisting of a series of dialogs between Nick and a Buffettesque billionaire oracle in Wichita, Francis Xavier. One (surprisingly) reassuring conclusion the author leads us to? Capitalism isn’t all that bad.A modern investment classic that delights and instructs, The Rebel Allocator covers a lot of ground in a brisk 200 pages. It is accessible and informative without being too textbooky or pedantic. By the end, I felt like I’d earned a business minor, all for the price of just $9.99.In a way, this book tells the story of its own making. As for this review, it would not be complete without a quote from the novel’s titular character, who, in a kind of self-referential gloss, tells us:“Think about the return on investment a book offers. For around ten dollars, you get to have a conversation with an expert who dedicated years to distilling all the information about a topic. If it took the author one year of work, you’re paying them about one penny per hour. How much time does this penny-per-hour investment save you in culling through information? We’re talking lifetimes.”

The Rebel Allocator by Jacob Taylor (https://www.amazon.com/Rebel-Allocator-Jacob-Taylor/dp/173268832X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1550246005&sr=8-1&keywords=the+rebel+allocator) is a fictional novel involving a series of dialogues between an older successful businessman (Francis Xavier, “Mr. X”) and a recent college graduate (“Nick”). Nick just starting his professional career as an entry-level analyst in the cutthroat world of private equity, while Mr. X is an older and well-known businessman who operates a burger chain (“Cootie Burger”) headquartered in Wichita Kansas. Mr. X is plain-spoken, playful, insightful, ambitious, and purposeful and methodical in his actions. He believes that business is his calling in his life and is extremely engaged in his pursuits. Nick has a very limited understanding of business, having majored in journalism. Soon after his first year at the private equity firm, Nick is essentially forced to start a graduate program in business (i.e., “MBA”) in order to continue his employment. He meets Mr. X while in school and the two begin a series of dialogues with the stated purpose of Nick writing an authorized biography on the business titan. The graduate school program enables Nick to have a very basic understanding of general business topics (i.e., accounting, investments, competitive strategy, etc.), which serves him well as he engages with Mr. X. One could argue that Nick is on parallel graduate school tracks, one curriculum taught by the local university in California (theoretical) and one taught by Mr. X (practical). Mr. X understands that he has to communicate somewhat abstract business concepts to a novice and uses the Socratic method to ensure that his pupil retains a clear understanding of vital fundamentals. The core of the Mr. X curriculum is capital allocation, which the author very elegantly describes as “the process of deciding how money is spent inside a company.”The series of dialogues between Mr. X and Nick explores key principles for business and life. The latter is important as those who anticipate a clever story limited to business should expect pleasant surprises related to life as well. Additional storylines (i.e., Nick and his girlfriend, Nick and his private equity employer) are strategically weaved around the central purpose of the dialogues, allowing the reader to stay emotionally engaged. The author notes “emotion is the glue that makes any lesson stick.” The novel is compact; approximately 250 pages and 45 succinct chapters. Most readers, particularly those with a background in business and/or finance, can likely move through at a brisk pace, yet still digest the key points. I finished the book in only two sittings and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. As someone with a background in finance and investments (i.e., MBA, CFA charter), I was already familiar with many of the concepts introduced in the novel. Nevertheless, my understanding of key business concepts increased immeasurably. More importantly though, my appreciation for and my understanding of other ideas (business and life principles) “brokered” by the author was profound. Why use the term “brokered”? As the author readily admits in the acknowledgements section, “you won’t find an original idea of mine in this book.” Essentially, the author curates a wealth of powerful ideas across multiple disciplines and strategically incorporates them into the novel at critical times to benefit the reader. Are you familiar with the concept of mental models, or of specific mental models like “The Pareto Principle” or “The Map is Not the Territory”? Are you familiar with the term “biological baggage” and how our biological impulses influence our decision-making? Are you familiar with the concept of yarak (staying hungry) or of the pinecone strategy (extreme patience)? If not, be prepared for countless and wondrous ideas that can help you in life and in business, primarily by avoiding being stupid (see Charlie Munger) and by attempting to minimize unforced errors (see Howard Marks). The acknowledgements section alone is a treasure trove of ideas for anyone to research independently. As someone who is attracted to ideas, this was akin to striking gold. This is a wonderful book for anyone to read and should be appreciated by experts and novices alike. I highly recommend it and feel quite strongly that the yield (i.e., ideas harvested after reading) relative to the cost ($14 on Amazon) is very high (hint – this is good). On a final note, one key message delivered by the novel is how capital allocation done properly (simple but not easy) can not only benefit an individual company (public or private) but also benefit countless other stakeholders (hint – society at large). Lastly, don’t take my word for it. A well-known gentlemen (1/2 of Mr. X really) also seems to agree https://www.wsj.com/articles/when-charlie-munger-calls-listen-and-learn-11548421209 with me. Enjoy!

When the movie Moneyball came, I wondered how in the world would someone turn that great book into a movie? But they managed to do it. Even less probable than that- writing a fiction novel about capital allocation. But Jacob Taylor has pulled it off.The book operates on two levels, first the character's journey to self discovery and learning about the world, including business. Inside of this narrative Taylor skillfully embeds hard won lessons on capital allocation from Buffett, Munger, 3G, and others. For example, how to think about the difference of strategic versus non-strategic expenses, cutting the latter and investing in the former. By themselves, these lessons would form a useful compendium of important lessons for investors to keep in mind. They would also be quite dry. Taylor weaves them each into a highly engaging narrative and since it is part of a story, the lessons stick. Meat on the bone, not abstract conceptual. It is obvious he picked up some craftmanship from Steven Pressfield.A quote from the book sums up my experience, “Think about the return on investment a book offers. For around ten dollars, you get to have a conversation with an expert who dedicated years to distilling all the information about a topic. If it took the author one year of work, you’re paying them about one cent an hour"

Read 1/2 book not knowing if it was fiction as Jacob interviews a lot of people including CEOs and these types of guys. So it is more than just non-fiction. Wish his parents were ultra - liberals instead of environmental activists, which more fit their description. I wish the final message would have been corporations help more people than Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Robert Reich, Richard Wolff, Kamala Harris, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, et. al. ever will. But nice to read a pro capitalism book for a change since all the horrible anti-capitalism books only get made into movies. Hope it does get made into a movie.

To read the book reviews you expect a lot “an investment classic”, “profound business principals”, “a must own”, but I could not agree with a single one. Found it dull, rambling, and not delivering much about capital allocation.

Nice book.Few corrections concerning Chernobyl accident discussed in chapter4. First, RBMK reactor is shielded (it is not be possible to operateunshielded reactor). Second, the accident was much worse than the coremeltdown. Destruction of the reactor started by powerexcursion. Reactor confinement was destroyed by explosions. Itprovided leakpath for radioactivity release. Fire of graphitemoderator then lifted radioactive gas and particles to thestratosphere.Comment to the E-book typography: using of two font sizes rends thebook difficult to read on Kindle (at least with my eyes).

I picked up Vaclav Smil's Energy because I wanted to better understand mankind's current use of energy, and to develop a better perspective on how I personally consume energy. The book was perfect for both of these purposes. At ~200 pages, I figured the book would provide a quick survey of many topics at a high level, and wouldn't read like a science textbook. This is true, but someone looking for an overview should know that this book is packed with detailed explanations of the topics that are covered. As a non-scientist, this book increased my knowledge and certainly shed light on the applications to modern life that I was looking for.I highly recommend this book.

Excellent summary for an intro energy college class. Quantitative tables and sidebars but very readable main text. Half the book covers energy in the natural world and human nutrition as foragers. The rest is a bit rushed but can be supplemented by Smil's excellent 2017 Oil 2nd ed and Natural Gas books, all very reasonably priced.

The first chapter is tedious. I never did fully internalize some of the more esoteric concepts in college, such as mols and joules, and still don't, but the rest of the book is chuck full of amazing data and factoids. It left me in awe of just how much we humans have come to know. Also, it puts in perspective some of the climate change issues. Just remember, there will not be a quiz and enjoy knowing that out there scientists actually understand a lot more than today's media can ever present.

Definitely has some great information regarding the topic, though there is no compelling narrative to make you absorb those facts and integrate them into your memory bank.

I read “Energy and Civilization” enjoyed that and decided to read this book. I think one or the other is sufficient. They both are good and communicate our reliance on fossil fuels and the need to find alternatives.

Super interesting book, it is an amazing introduction to energy as a concept and its history. Then leads you into the practical uses we as humans have mastered and how what we can somewhat achieve with it in the future! Amazing book!

Vaclav Smil has a great way of presenting facts and figures so that you understand them in context.I learned a lot from this.
