My wife and I have recently retired and moved to Florida from the northern Ohio. As an avid and increasingly older outdoorsmen I decided that bird identification was another opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. The first problem I discovered was that Florida is swamp-deep in every kind of bird imaginable and many species look alike to my untrained eye. I needed an easily understandable book to help me begin identification and "Birds of Florida - Field Guide" filled the bill.Bird identification takes some work and the book breaks the process into easily understood parts starting with color. As an example, all birds that are mostly white are grouped together and each page in the white section presents a picture of each white species, a description of the unique features to look for confirming identity and a "compare" paragraph about very similar species, differences, and the page where the similar species can be found. In a short time this rank-amateur and old geezer was able to tell the difference between a Double-crested Cormorant and an Anhinga, a Snowy Egret and a Great Egret, and how about that! This book is great and a companion audio CD is available to help identify bird calls if you can still hear.

EXCELLENT bird book! I cannot say enough good things about this book. This handy little book gives more information than you would expect. Tons of information. Shows nice colored pictures of males, females and juveniles. Color coding on side of pages is a great reference and speeds identification. Whatever color bird you see, just look to the color coding on the outside of the pages. Nice pictures and convenient size. We were nicely surprised to see all the information provided in this book. So even if you are not a "bird watcher", you will be after purchasing this book!

I'm not a bird watching hobbyist but we moved to Florida a couple years ago from up north and found all the different types of birds that live here very interesting. We live along a river that flows into Tampa Bay. We see many birds daily, especially hanging out on our boat dock. I also homeschool my 7 year old son, who loves all types of animals and birds. This book is never on a bookshelf. It's sitting out in the living room or in a bag to go places with us because we use it a lot. Our routine is this: we spot a bird. We grab the cheap binoculars I got from Amazon, we watch the bird and make note of its color, size, beak shape, and other features. Then we get out the book and find out what type of bird it is. It's fun and educational. The book is small and easy to toss in a purse or small bag to take along when we go out for the day, yet full of great pictures and info. I haven't seen a bird yet that I couldn't find in the book.

Great guide, good size and beautiful photos. Has most of the gorgeous birds you'll find in Florida and the range maps are super easy to help determine what birds you see. They are also coded by color which makes identification even easier.

Very nice book. Beautiful, real pictures of the birds found in our area along with a nice description. Size of book is perfect to take in the field, even though mine never leaves our screen porch coffee table. Had the in-laws visiting from KY and it was really nice to have this there for them.

I gave this book 4 stars because, while it is very good, it falls short of perfection. However, it is better than a 4, so I would have liked to give it a 4 1/2.Here are the pros: - The book is tabbed in the upper right-hand corner of each listing with a code showing the color of the bird, and the birds are grouped by this color classification. This is a much more useful organization that taxonomic or classification. If a bird is in this book, it is easier to find than in other guides. - The illustrations seem sparser than in other field guides, but what is there is spot on. Many birds change their plumage during the year or life cycle. The author has selected illustrations that are the most typical for the species. Here are the cons: - With 167 birds there are a significant number of birds on the missing list. There are birds that I see in my Florida back yard that are not in this book. - There is less information on each bird than in other guides. For example, flight and song information is entirely missing. (The song information is on a CD, not included with the book.)With a 4 1/2 rating, I most certainly would recommend this to my friends.

I bought this book to help identify birds closely when I’m on the road in Florida. I especially interested in birds of prey and cultures. I did not like the color-coded identification system, as many birds are multicolored and does not help when adolescent birds may be of different colored plumage. I felt that very few birds of prey were mentioned, which is unusual since Florida has many raptors.

My friend loves watching birds and when he was visiting with us he was immensely pleased with this guide to the birds of Florida. He used it quite often and had nothing but good comments concerning the contents and ease of use.
