About the Author

Amy Lansky graduated from the University of Rochester in 1977 with degrees in mathematics and computer science. She received her doctorate in computer science from Stanford University in 1983. After many years working at various Silicon Valley research institutions, Lansky made an unusual career move -- she became a student, writer, and promoter of homeopathic medicine. This was prompted by the miraculous cure of her son's autism with homeopathy. She serves on the board of the National Center for Homeopathy and has been active in the national health freedom movement. She is dedicated to helping others -- especially families with autistic children -- discover the curative powers of homeopathy.

Very well written. This book is quite persuading in support of homeopathy, an alternative medicine which used to be very active but has been put down and neglected for about 100 years in America. The story of miraculous cure of her son's autism is amazing. The book contains many more personal experiences from many people in many different health situation.I think the fact that the author was a scientist is really helping. She is logical and rational throughout. She covers the birth of homeopathy and the history of homeopathy in the US. She also bravely discuss the recent scientific background for homeopathy. All was done in a logical and balanced way; though of course she is strongly in support of homeopathy, she covers scepticism toward homeopathy as well.I'm new to homeopathy and I've only read a few books about homeopathy but this one is so far the best of all.

I agree, this book was life-changing! I was just learning a bit about Homeopathy and still quite skeptical about the whole thing. Amy's story is honest, compelling and convincing. By far, it is the best explanation for anyone open to learning about this amazing science. Homeopathy is nothing short of miraculous (and no side effects!). I now reach for my kit FIRST when treating my family and my dogs. Since animals are not capable of "the placebo effect" it is wonderful to see it work for them.

I wish I knew about the curative power of homeopathy when I mother developed dementia and my son was given a diagnosis of schizophrenia, both of which occurred more or less at the same time. I had my hands full with my son, and could do nothing to help my mother, who lived a continent away. I remember my father poignantly asking me if I knew about anything that could help her, as the doctors said it was an untreatable condition. Had I known about homeopathy then what I know now, my mother's (and father's!) final decade of life might have been very different. I eventually figured out how to help my son recover from his schizophrenia, but after reading Impossible Cure, I believe we might have cut to the chase and cleared up his symptoms much faster than we did. Much of what I learned from trying various treatments for his "schizophrenia" are compatible with the principles and theory of homeopathy. What I can do now that I didn't do then is to order this book for my relatives and find myself a good classical homeopath to treat my immediate family.

I just started studying homeopathy and this book was recommended to me. This is honestly one of the most well-written, informative and fascinating books that I have ever read, and has taken my interest in homeopathy to a whole new level. The author is clearly extremely well-educated and very credible. For anyone who doesn't believe in this system of medicine, I challenge you to read this book and not be a changed person! I cannot say enough positive things about this book and I hope it encourages more people to open their minds to the amazing world of homeopathy.

I have read this book to the end and I would recommend it to anyone who has been let down by conventional doctors and is looking for an effective and natural way to help their children. I have two kids with PANDAS and homeopathy is working for them, thank God!But really, the reviews should not be about a person's individual experience with homeopathy. The book, while sharing some personal experience, is a very good introduction to homeopathy, and even for those who are already familiar with it, it explains so many aspects of it in such a clear way.Of course, no book can take the place of a good homeopath. That's not what the book is about. It's not a "how-to-cure-your-child-overnight" manual! It is, however, a very good introduction and preparation if you are seriously interested in giving homeopathy a chance. So please do not be discouraged by negative reviews from people who simply are against homeopathy and have not actually tried it (or tried it for a short time only). There is no magic bullet. But homeopathy works, and it's not a "new-age" or "magical" approach. It is a science, and it takes a trained professional to administer it safely and effectively.

Great book, gives very comprehensive coverage of the topic of homeopathy, from it's beginnings down through the ages to current info. Very well-written and informative, so much so that I mentioned the book to several family doctors, and both bought a copy for themselves.

About the Author

Patti Smith is a writer, performer, and visual artist. She gained recognition in the 1970s for her revolutionary merging of poetry and rock. She has released twelve albums, including Horses, which has been hailed as one of the top one hundred albums of all time by Rolling Stone.  Smith had her first exhibit of drawings at the Gotham Book Mart in 1973 and has been represented by the Robert Miller Gallery since 1978. Her books include Just Kids, winner of the National Book Award in 2010, Wītt, Babel, Woolgathering, The Coral Sea, and Auguries of Innocence.  In 2005, the French Ministry of Culture awarded Smith the title of Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres, the highest honor given to an artist by the French Republic. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.  Smith married the musician Fred Sonic Smith in Detroit in 1980. They had a son, Jackson, and a daughter, Jesse. Smith resides in New York City.

I almost stopped halfway through. A good friend encouraged me to continue. "It gets better," she said. I continued because of that and because I have loved and respected Patti Smith's music and poetry since I was in my mid-teens. I was a charter member of her fan club in the mid-'70s. I also feel it's my responsibility as a committed reader to finish a book that's been written with grit and authenticity.It got a little better, but I continued to feel like I didn't really know where she was or who she was talking about a lot of the time. There were a number of paragraphs I had to read over and over again to track where we were: the equivalent of talking to someone who's speaking almost inaudibly or with a thick, unusual accent. I felt like I was squinting my eyes and craning my neck to track her conversation.There's no doubt of her being a brilliant wordsmith and poet, and that she has shared her grief in a poetic and deep way.At the end of the story, I was disappointed that after all the poignant mentions about her husband Fred and after I, the reader, proving my interest and investment by hanging in there till the end of the book she doesn't share with us what happened. I felt let down.To assuage my disappointment, I googled Fred Smith and learned this (which helped me to have completion):"In 1976, firebrand rock poetess Patti Smith visited Detroit while touring behind her album Radio Ethiopia, and was introduced to Fred Sonic Smith at a party held at Lafayette Coney Island, one of the city's most celebrated hot dog stands. While Fred Smith was married at the time, he and Patti immediately hit it off, and before long a low-key romance blossomed between them. By 1978, Fredwas once again single, and he and Patti were free to go public with their relationship. In 1980, Fredand Patti were married; Sonic's Rendezvous Band had recently broken up, and after a calamitous European tour following the release of her album, Wave, Patti opted to retire from touring. The couple moved to St. Clair Shores, a suburb of Detroit, and quietly settled down to raise a son and a daughter away from the media spotlight and the rigors of a musician's life. Both Patti and Fred continued to write music together, and in 1986, Patti came out of retirement to record the album Dream of Life. Fred wrote much of the material in collaboration with Patti, played guitar on the album, and helped to produce the sessions. In a 1996 interview, Patti said, "Dream of Life was really more Fred's record -- it was all Fred's music, Fred's philosophy." Though it featured the anthemic "People Have the Power," a song that would become a highlight of Patti's live shows, Dream of Life failed to find an audience, despite strong reviews. Sadly, it would prove to be one of Fred's last major projects. In the late '80s, his health went into decline, and on November 9, 1994, Fred Sonic Smith died of heart failure in a Detroit hospital -- ironically, the same malady that took the life of MC5 vocalist Rob Tyner two years earlier." A lot of literary name-dropping, and her deepest relationships in the story appear to be with the dead or with inanimate objects (a coat, stones, coffee). I'll be pondering this one for a while.All of that said, Patti Smith is a deep, unique artist in a soul-less age. For that, I am deeply grateful.

This is the only Patti Smith book I have read so I cannot compare it to her past memoir JUST KIDS or anything else she has written. It appears many reviewers have been put off by the book due to its "arcane" references. I found it a compelling read and as one commentator suggested already, anyone with a bit of intellectual curiosity can explore the books and artists she references quite easily. I make it a habit of writing down every reference I don't know or fully understand for every book I read. I believe I had five note cards filled at end of M Train with things to look up and learn. This is not a straightforward story type of memoir and those seeking that and who have little intellectual curiosity will be disappointed. If you are the type of person who enjoys listening to a very intelligent, well-read and thoughtful person describe moments of their life, past and present, with plenty of references sprinkled in about books and places and observations and experiences then you will enjoy this book. I liked the fact that Smith shows no self-pity and seems to be aging gracefully and clearly has a curious mind.

I've been a fan of Patti's music,and poetry since her first album "Horses". I loved her book "Just Kids",and I own most of her poetry books. Seeing Patti perform is exciting,and she exudes a strange, exotic, sensuality on stage. So...I was so looking forward to" M Train." I felt that it took us on an uncomfortable excursion around the world visiting dead "Icons" she admired,including photos. Coffee,and detective shows were also a strong theme,and if you didn't watch these shows you wouldn't understand some of her passages. I wanted to know more about her life now,aside from visiting coffee shops.This book was not terrible, however, not her best. Sorry Patti.This books title should have been titled "Eulogies".

What sort of book is this? Nothing like "Just Kids." It’s not exactly a memoir and certainly not an autobiography. I’d say more than anything it’s a journal—some entries deal with recent events, some with events in the author’s earlier life, and some describe her fantasies and dream life. So, what’s it about? Certain themes occur and recur here—coffee, fascination with television police procedurals, foreign travel, and grief. The entries describe the life of an aging widow who lives alone with cats. The distinguishing traits of this person’s journal and why it’s eminently worth reading are her renown as a godmother of punk rock and, even more importantly, her tremendous facility with the written word. Furthermore, what kept me immersed in this journal were her descriptions of the books she’s read and re-read, many of which I feel we’ve shared.

I enjoyed Patti Smith's memoir "Just Kids" so much that when I saw she had another book published this year I just had to read it, and I'm glad I did. This book is very different from her earlier memoir, not nearly as linear, for one thing, and not covering a particular period of time. M Train is written in a loose, free-flowing style like a meandering voice of poetry. She dips in and out of time, talking about her parents, her husband Fred whose death she still mourns, her children, and her various travels. Her photographs illustrate the book and they are mostly photos of objects that she loves because each one reminds her of someone--her father's chair, Frieda Kahlo's bed, the boardwalk at Rockaway. One of the narrative threads in her book is her purchase of a small cottage in Rockaway, which she bought just before hurricane Sandy struck and destroyed the boardwalk as well as many of the houses. The book is plotless, but gives a good sense of Smith and of the things that are important to her. People who share her interest in the natural world around us and the artists and writers she knew, will enjoy spending this time with Smith.

The level of sophistication seems to rise almost daily, changing the nature of investigations, the rate of convictions, and the very process of justice. Cold cases can be revived and solved, and the wrongly convicted can go free. Sometimes.Along the way, it is inevitable that the reader learns some odd facts:-dead bodies absorb arsenic from surrounding soil, making the claim of arsenic poisoning suspect.-hair grows about a centimeter month, allowing scientists to track drug consumption.-the iphone 5S has a specialized location chip that runs off reserve power. People have reported their iphones continuing to track their movements for four days after the battery has died and the phone shut itself off.-thanks to various insatiably curious scientists, we know the thickness of facial flesh and can reconstruct faces from skulls. We can determine the size and shape of an entire body from a bone fragment. We know what bugs consume dead human flesh, when they do it, what stage of life they were at the time, and can pinpoint the time of death by them.-the study of blood splatter has come to the point where we can reconstruct everything about the scene from it. Tiny splatters of DNA-worthy blood are now expected and found in places no one ever looked before.-women are 85% of forensic psychologists.-the British police hire scientists and psychologists to solve crimes, creating profiles from the clues at the crime scene. I teach physiology and pathophysiology, and so I'm kind of interested in the opposite of these classes, which would be forensics. I often have to talk about muscles and how they work while people are alive, so it is paramount that I understand how these things work when they are dead (such as rigor mortis). I've read a couple of forensic books before, but I found this one fascinating. It's written by someone from Great Britain, but I found the information shared from over there on various cases and how forensics helped to solve some of these cases. The author of this book apparently writes crime fiction, which I enjoy once in a while...but this book is a good introduction to the field of forensics. The writing is very understandable, and there isn't an overload of science in it which might confuse some readers. Like other reviewers said, she has a nicely conversational style.I personally will look for something with more of the science in it. I wasn't expecting a book loaded with scientific information, so I wasn't disappointed. I've learned to read the reviews of other readers so that doesn't happen to me. On the whole, a good basic book on forensics to start out with.

This book is very much like a textbook. It details the history of forensics and gives examples of why and how certain processes and techniques came about and were developed. I found it to be quite dry and came close several times to quitting reading it. For those readers seeking sensational cases and gory details, look elsewhere. It also had several typos, which surprised me, given the author's amount of research and attention to detail.

This is an entry level text, which offers about the same amount of information as if you sat down and watched a season or two of a police procedural drama. I had a distinct impression that I was following a passionate curator through a museum. Ms. McDermid draws us in and intrigues us with the histories and capabilities of various investigative techniques, while having the diligence and courage to temper those tales with knowledge of their shortcomings.There's significant value in the author's rigor, but this book left me wanting. Some of this is likely my fault because I'd prefer to wander through the reeds of minutiae of each specialty. At least a little bit it's because the author doesn't very well wrap up each segment, so I had a bunch of "What happened after that?!" moments.'Forensics' does serve as a launchpad for further reading, and for that reason I'll probably suggest it to others with relevant interests.

I'm a huge fan of non-fiction forensics, so I've read a few books in the genre. However, I have learned a great deal of entirely new and mind-boggling information from McDermid's work, especially how the UK's forensics networks differ from the United States. This is such an easy-to-read, page-turning book. She includes photographs as well. A few missed periods and spelling errors (can get a bit distracting) which I attributed to editing rather than the author, but otherwise I would recommend this to anyone interested in pathology, forensics, or even true crime.

Ms McDermid covers a lot of forensic ground here about crime from a British perspective - a good overview of scientific advances available to homicide investigators as of circa 2014. However, it took me an over-long time to finish reading Forensics: The Anatomy of Crime due to the ever-present, startlingly realistic images of FLIES on every other page. I realize of course that flies yield up serious evidence regarding the various stages of decomposition but these distracting reminders of the way of all flesh often gave me pause and prevented me from steadily turning pages. I kept thinking of what Emily Dickinson once wrote: "I heard a fly buzz when I died."
