Case Formulation with Children and Adolescents

Review

"Finally! This book will revive the vanishing skill of gathering multi-source clinical information and integrating it into a comprehensive formulation to guide culturally and developmentally sensitive biopsychosocial treatment. Manassis brings extensive clinical experience to her dedication to evidence-based mental health practice. This book should be required reading for all clinicians who aspire to provide optimal treatment for children and their families."--Mina K. Dulcan, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine; Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago "Child clinicians often struggle to form cogent case conceptualizations. Now their struggle is over! This expertly crafted, comprehensive guide is replete with charts, diagrams, and case examples to help both experienced and beginning clinicians paint rich conceptual portraits. Most important, Manassis's work is developmentally sensitive, culturally attuned, links treatment to formulation, and teaches clinicians to collaboratively share their conceptualization with young patients and their families. I will keep this book close to my desk for ready reference."--Robert D. Friedberg, PhD, ABPP, Professor and Director, Center for the Study and Treatment of Anxious Youth, Palo Alto University "Manassis has an exceptional talent for illuminating key concepts through insightful yet concise clinical examples. Her knowledge, skills, and compassion as a master clinician are evident. This book helps clinicians tackle complex, challenging situations that require digging deeper into the child and family's history and experiences to help them reach their treatment goals. I highly recommend this book for seasoned clinicians as well as multidisciplinary trainees in child mental health. An amazing teaching tool, the book is filled with clinical pearls that will keep students engaged in learning. I plan to use it in my teaching and supervision with child psychiatry fellows and my multidisciplinary team."--Sucheta Connolly, MD, Department of Psychiatry and Director, Pediatric Stress and Anxiety Disorders Clinic, University of Illinois at Chicago "Manassis, an extremely effective and knowledgeable psychiatrist, gives front-line professionals very practical guidelines for developing comprehensive formulations--even for the most complex cases--and revising them as needed. Examples throughout the book demonstrate the utility of Manassis's approach for preschoolers, school-age children, and adolescents. While this outstanding book is definitely very useful for all mental health clinicians, it is especially invaluable as a teaching tool for trainees in all mental health disciplines. I particularly appreciated the discussion of how to effectively communicate case formulations to children and their families."--Simon Davidson, MD, Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario and Department of Psychiatry, University of Ottawa, Canada

Well thought out and thorough. Well written and smart

An excellent resource for mental heath practitioners. Perfect guide for how to construct case formulations for some of the most common mental health disorders in children and adolescents!!!

provides a lot of information

This book is an excellent resource anyone exploring the field of child and adolescent psychiatry and mental health. It explains the utility of case formulation in guiding the understanding and treatment of individuals, and does so in a very clear, concise, easy to understand way.The author helps readers particularly in understanding the wonderful and complex layers that contribute to child mental health. It explores the different components of a formulation - the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual/cultural factors that influence a presentation. The book also breaks down case formulation for different age groups (preschoolers, school-age children, and adolescents), explaining unique aspects of and developmental issues faced by each of these age groups. Multiple case examples are used throughout the length of the book, helping the reader understand how to apply the concepts read. I specifically enjoyed some of the clinical pearls that are made note of in the book.Particularly as a learner, it is a great "bird's eye view" in understanding mental health in children and adolescents.-Elaine Chow, Psychiatry resident, McMaster University

We ordered the Alice in Wonderland with the green leather cover. I thought it was difficult to tell which reviews went with which versions. I'm really glad we grabbed this version, the cover (despite the ugly green color) is quite beautiful with embossed lettering and shiny red roses and border. The edge of the pages are golden, there is a red ribbon for marking your page. All of the original artwork is presented, and the page layouts are perfect. The front and back cover have a vivid full color painting of the tea party. If you are looking for a high quality version of the book, I couldn't recommend this one more. The size is medium. It is half way between the size of a paperback and a hard cover text book.

This review is for the RED "hardcover" and I will post pictures because when I read reviews prior to purchase I was super confused and had no idea which book the reviews were about.First, the cover is gorgeous but it's not "hardcover" (see photo). It's a lovely soft cover, covered with leather which is partially embossed; the gold lettering appears to be painted on. The back cover is just as well made and embossed as well.Second, this is the full version of both stories, not an "abridged" version. The generous illustrations are beautifully done.I can't believe this book is only $10!I hope my review helps!

I had a difficult time determing which version was being reviewed in many of these reviews, so I am specifically reviewing the version that is illustrated by Anna Bond. This is a great version to use with younger kids- it has larger print and illustrations on almost every page. If you want to purchase accompanying audio to listen with, just buy the unabridged version and it should be a match.

I loathe when Amazon lumps the reviews of different books together so this is for the hardcover version illustrated by Charles Santore. The cover is beautiful with an older looking cover and the color illustration of Alice falling. The sketches throughout the book are in black and white. The pages are thick and sturdy but cut roughly on the sides. The font is a great size and spacing and on a very white background. I hate when they use a small print and tight spacing on older books. The sketches are beautifully done and do a wonderful job of bringing Alice and the story to life. They do pale in comparison to the illustrated versions but unfortunately that edition is abridged. I had never read the story before so I was not aware of the differences between Alice’s Adventures Underground and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland but there are many. This book for example does not have the chapter on the Mad Tea Party. That and other parts would be added in to the story so if that’s the version you are interested in than this is not the version for you.

This is incredible! Absolutely beautiful.. Extended my expectations!! I have seriously never seen a more beautiful book! The detail is awesome and even the story itself is from the original Lewis Carroll version. Not only is each page a beautiful pop up.. But each page has mini fold out pages with more pop up artwork. This will be a keepsake for our family. SO glad I bought this and will look at buying others!

I don't always like annotated editions, but I bought this one because both stories were included and it retains all of the original illustrations like the ones I remember reading as a child. Having said that, I enjoyed the illustrations by other artists included for historical context. Some of them are quite stunning, in fact. The thing I hate about annotated editions is the way the annotations create visual "clutter." Yes, that is the case here as well. I really have to force my slightly OCD-like mind to ignore that and concentrate on the text of the story. However, as a history buff, I enjoy reading the annotations from a historical perspective. It's a big book, so if you enjoy a hefty hardcover, this is the one for you.

This review is specifically for the penguin hardcover cloth-bound classics edition (white with pink flamingos)!Naturally, the tale of Alice in Wonderland (told in two books; Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass) is definitely a fun, unique tale that appeals to children and adults alike, so of course I wanted to own a quality copy of it! I like how this edition contains both books and is hardcover with a simple cover design that looks timeless and elegant on my bookshelf. The book is full of useful notes and information in edition to having the tale; plus it contains the classic illustrations too! The paper is very high quality, the printing very attractive, and overall it was well worth the $10 I spent on it. I thought it was such an attractive edition that I bought one for my sister, who is a collector of the various editions of this tale. I've no complaints except that I don't really care for how rough the fabric is; it's not very nice to hold in your bare hands in my opinion, and it makes a sound when it's placed on the shelf next to other cloth-bound hardcovers from the penguin classics series, so those are two things to keep in mind. I personally would have preferred either a softer fabric or for the books to have been bound in hard-backed pleather.

Toxic Truth: A Scientist, a Doctor, and the Battle over Lead, by Lydia Denworth

Review

Before most Americans had given a thought to lead poisoning, a geochemist named Clair Patterson and a passionate doctor, Herb Needleman, were learning just how widespread it was, and how damaging. Their work set the framework for the future examination of man-made toxins, and their scientific and political struggles for the truth set a pattern for future battles between industry and advocates over the significance of toxics. With plenty of gritty details, Lydia Denworth tells the story of these two giant lead-killers, shedding light on the foundations of a key issue in public policy.—Arthur Allen, author of Vaccine: The Controversial Story of Medicine's Greatest Lifesaver"Toxic Truth is a compelling and forceful portrayal of the lives and pain of these two remarkable scientific pioneers. An impressively researched and well-documented book, it is an astonishing chronicle of one of the most insidious and avoidable health problems of our time." —Dr. Devra Davis, author of When Smoke Ran Like Water: Tales of Environmental Deception and the Battle against Pollution"In Toxic Truth, Lydia Denworth has pulled off a rare feat: she's written a true page-turner, animated by a fascinating medical mystery, that's also a nuanced and immensely thoughtful look at how good ideas can overthrow orthodoxy—and ultimately make the world a better place."—Steven Johnson, author of The Ghost Map: The Story of London's Most Terrifying Epidemic—and How It Changed Science, Cities, and the Modern World"The 'unearthing' of the problem of children's injury from environmental lead, by intrepid researchers such as Needleman and Patterson, makes for an intriguing chronicle. The pitfalls and challenges they encountered at every step, their persistence in the face of extraordinary attacks, are instructive for others who pursue the truth with the courage of their convictions."—Dr. Alan Woolf, Director, Pediatric Environmental Health Center at Children's Hospital, Boston, and Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Harvard Medical School"Toxic Truth is an engrossing and inspiring story of how two courageous men shone the clear light of science on industry's effort to conceal the harm to our children—and to all of us—by lead in the environment."—Philip and Alice Shabecoff, authors of Poisoned Profits: The Toxic Assault on Our Children

This book is, in large part, about my father who first established in 1976 that subclinical lead exposure was harmful in amounts previously felt to be safe. the work led the EPA to restrict lead usage, and this has been linked by some to the decline in urban violence seen since the 80s and 90s. I admit therefore, that this may not be an impartial review. His work was discredited, initially by two women whose careers were financially supported by the industry that stood to suffer negative impact from his work's fruition. Nonetheless, he fought on, and the data were reviewed by at least THREE outside panels and found to be reproducible. He was completely exonerated, and the rest is history.Denworth has done a very fine job summarizing the scientific, political, economic and personal issues that were involved in this tail for my father and another investigator. She did research the story in exquisite detail and writes with straightforward and elegant prose.

An important book that every scientist, doctor, politician, policymaker, professor, college administrator and concerned citizen should read.Clair Patterson and Herbert Needleman are heroes of the magnitude of Harriet Tubman, Mohandas Gandhi, and Jonas Salk. As the result of great courage, dedication, persistence, and ingenuity, they made the world a better, safer place. This isn't just a story of how a poison was halted from entering our air, water, soil, and bloodstreams. . . It is a story of how the scientific and political worlds learned how to be better and stronger in protecting human health and human dignity. It is a wake-up call to those who do not realize there are some people who are willing to poison all of humankind in the name of larger profits.I am a middle school science teacher, and all of my students will learn the names of Clair Patterson and Herbert Needleman in my classroom from now on. That is how inspirational this book is to me, and how important its message is to future generations of scientists and policymakers.

This is a good book about two heroes: the man who succeeded in getting the US to ban lead in gasoline, and the man who showed that lead contamination was dangerous for children. In a perfect world, both men: Patterson and Needleman, should have had the Nobel prize. In the 70s and 80s the cultural mood for it was not there.I used to work in a laboratory in Paris where most of the scientists quoted in the book came to give talks. Needleman had come up with the idea of measuring lead not in blood, because blood is renewed too fast in the body, but in baby teeth. In baby teeth, the whole history of lead contamination is integrated. Then, you have a point of comparison to measure, for instance the relation between lead and intellectual deficiencies. Needleman was so good that I remember everything he said, and this was 30 years ago. He had a program with a reward for kids who brought him their baby teeth and a lot of trouble with kids bringing him dog teeth and grandma's dentures! The correlations he found between lead and loss of IQ got us to ask a lot of questions: it is pretty hard to justify that you see the effect of lead when so many factors (race, heredity, fortune, education) are expected to play a role. But he had thought of everything and I got to say that he was not only very good, he was also very cool. We were impressed.Patterson was totally dedicated to educate everybody about lead. I remember him in a chic restaurant in Paris refusing a bottle of wine capped with tin (as all bottles were in the 70s) and giving a 20 minutes lecture to the server: I had to translate, it was just as funny as it was embarrassing. We all admired Patterson because nobody had believed him for many years, especially the scientists who had bad data (lead is difficult to measure because contamination is easy) Most of the fight against fuel companies, he fought alone. He was for us the Richard Feynman of the environment: a role model. The book is timely, a good read and very well researched. It should be in every high school: look! This is what one person can do to change the world! A Short History of Nearly Everything has also a great portrait of Patterson and his discovery of the age of the earth.

I have been doing consulting on lead-based paint issues and EPA's abatement training since the early 90's. As one who has been involved in this but not on the front lines as Dr. Needleman and Patterson were, but aware to some degree of them both and these struggles, this book filled in my knowledge gaps wonderfully. Doing so as well in a way that is imminently readable. I felt very often as if I was there to witness the emergence of awarenesses of just what the cost's of lead being dispersed so widely into our environment were. I could not recommend this book any higher to anyone interested in this subject no matter what perspective you might approach it from.

Good journalism on the fight to get the lead out. The reporting seeming fair and unbiased and brought out the personalities of Needleman, Patterson and other participants. The only quibble I had was on minor detail describing Charles Kettering and Delco in Dayton around 1920 and the invention of leaded gasoline. The work was actually done via some of Kettering's other companies, but going into such detail would only have added confusion without much useful purpose. I didn't get the sense such issues were common in the rest of the book. I recommend it.

Hopefully this kind of history and these kinds of stories will keep us from poisoning ourselves in the future.

Fantastic book - written by a journalist in easily understood language with enough "scienctific speak" to make the story credible. An important historical analysis that sheds light on the way industry uses its tremendous influence against the public good - even when all signs are pointing to harm. I highly recommend this book, not only for environmental health activists, but any parent who wishes a better life for their child.Toxic Truth: A Scientist, a Doctor, and the Battle over Lead
