Review
"[A] freewheeling, insider memoir . . . Now [Ortiz’s] many fans have a book in which the hitter looks back at his extraordinary run and what made it go.” -- Boston Globe "The rise of Ortiz from scrap-heap bench player to Hall of Famer is an unlikely and entertaining story, and engagingly told in 'Papi: My Story' . . . As the unpolished reflections of one of the few ballplayers to redefine a club, it works perfectly . . .The memoir lives up to its 'no holds barred' billing." -- Washington Post "Baseball fans of all loyalties will enjoy learning about [Ortiz's] unique experiences in and out of the game." -- Library Journal

I give this book five stars for a number of reasons. First and foremost, I'm an avid Red Sox fan. I've been through the pain and suffering of the World Series drought. Papi was a key player for the Sox that helped change the mentality of the Boston Red Sox along with Pedro, Schilling, et al. I also appreciate his tell-it-like-it-is, no-nonsense style. And I'll never forget what he said to help the city of Boston and all of New England heal, after the 2013 Boston Marathon terrorist attack. It was nice to get his perspective on that as well as all of the personnel changes that took place during his tenure as a Red Sox.
As a devout Red Sox fan I have followed David Ortiz's career since his arrival in Boston. I enjoyed this read, learned some things I didn't know about baseball and the Red Sox Organization. Mostly I was fascinated to read David's approach to playing. He was so exceptional is so many ways and to hear him describe how much of this came about was compelling. I was thrilled to learn what a genuinely nice guy Manny Ramirez was/is and how hard he worked as a player and how truly smart he was. I had forgotten the role Pedro played in getting David to the Red Sox and I was disappointed to learn that the Sox didn't go to him more when going after big dollar players whom David knew could or could not survive the gauntlet of being a player in Boston. Very enjoyable read.
I like baseball a lot, but not especially the Red Socks. I don't dislike them at all, I just never followed them that closely. But guys like Ted Williams, Yaz, and Big Papi commanded my attention. I used a Christmas gift card to grab "Papi" and am so glad I did. The book follows him from his childhood in the Dominican Republic right up to the day of his retirement. The revelations he relates about his managers and fellow players are worth the price of the book alone. I liked everything about this book, and especially recall his rousing speech following the marathon massacre. If you like reading about genuine heroes and superstars, "Papi" is the book for you.
Seems like an honest autobiography. Not everything was perfect. Ortiz had a number of issues with media and Red Sox management. But he worked through it and in the end became a Red Sox for life.Lots of behind the scenes looks at what it is like to play professional baseball. It not as glamorous as it often looks. Told if first person (through Michael Holly) it is an easy and fun read. Hitting takes a lot of study. He really worked at that part of the game.
We all know the player David Ortiz. He's great no question I was amazed to learn about the man, his dedication to his teammates, the fans, and the city of Boston. I've been a fan of the Red Sox my whole life but I've always appreciated great players regardless of the teams they played for "big papi" is one of those greats. The book is a excellent insight to what Ortiz went through as a player and man
I love David Ortiz and I am a Red Sox fan too so not surprising I would love the book. He was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth and he worked hard to get where he did! More than his baseball accomplishments, I applaud his accomplishments as a human being. He is a humble human being! Great book! I wish he was the President of the USA!
I am from MN and always wondered what really went down with Ortiz and the Twins. That being said I didn't get all the answers I wanted and I still don't like the guy a whole ton but I have a lot more respect for him after reading his book! It is well written and keeps you wanting to know more.
Great autobiography, learned a lot about his career and his ups and downs. Really good read if you are a sox fan!
