Barsness is a Professor at The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology, the Brookhaven Institute for Psychoanalysis and Christian Theology, and the Relational Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy Group, Seattle. He was formally the Clinical Director at Seattle Pacific University and a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry. He has been in independent practice for over 25 years.

This book is such a treasure. Relational psychoanalysis is a deeply humanistic and respectful approach to working with individuals beyond symptom remission - to the core issues of what it means to be human. Barsness, et al., have managed to identify the central themes and goals of relational psychoanalysis based on the real work of relational clinicians. Each identified competency is then explained and expanded upon by an expert, providing a wonderfully comprehensive look at both the theory behind relational psychoanalysis and the clinicians! While the book is accessible for beginners in the field, seasoned therapists will also find it incredibly useful.

Excellent book! This book is written by some of the best thinkers in the field of psychoanalysis. I only wish this book was available to me when I was in my clinical psychology graduate program. I strongly recommend this important book to be assigned to all students of clinical psychology dedicated to the sacred work of psychotherapy. Bravo, Dr. Barsness, for putting such a beautiful and brilliant book together!

A must read for relational psychotherapists, this book offers something to stand on.
