I am a huge Johnny CASH fan and even if you are not, this book is a great historical perspective, in pictures, during a time when music was shaping our future.
Wonderful hardcover book with so many touching photos. I bought it for my mother and she was very happy with it.
Great photos by the best music photographer. Lucky to have been a friend of Jim Marshall’s and own two of his Johnny Cash photos. If you’re A Johnny Cash fan this book is a must have!!
Totally awesome book! Better than expected! It’s heavy, and good sized!
This is quite a mystical book. As you flip the pages and see frozen history through the lens of Jim Marshall's camera, you can almost hear the Folsom and San Quentin albums playing in your head; at least, I did. This is a beautifully produced, oversized book - what other than oversized to match the legend of Johnny Cash? - with photos galore of Cash and his entourage preparing for what they couldn't have imagined to be such a historic performance. Plenty of photos onstage, as well, the majority in black & white but several in color throughout. The San Quentin section is equally well represented, and includes the iconic "finger" shot, with an explanation of what prompted the photo - and a great story I didn't know about Rick Rubin's use of the photo. This book is literally the closest thing you can get to being in that stifling auditorium, listening to a genuine musical icon and, if only briefly, letting the troubles of your life and circumstances fade away.
2018 Marks the 50th anniversary of the January 1968 concerts by Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison in California. (There were two concerts in the cafeteria – 9:30 am and 12:40 PM). A year later Cash performed at San Quentin Prison near San Francisco. All three concerts were recorded by Columbia Records and became legendary albums. Of the 16 tracks on the Folsom album, only two are from the 12:40 PM show (songs that were omitted from the morning one.The only authorized photographer chosen – personally – by Cash was Jim Marshall, probably better known for his jazz photos – of which there are quite a few books. (Marshall died in 2010 and his archive is now managed by photographer Amelia Davis). This volume is co-published by the British Reel Art Press and the US-based BMG Books. It is large-size and heavy (weighing in at three pounds!). While much of it consists of mostly-full-page photos, there are four essays. The first is a wonderful five-page all-text appreciation of Cash by his biggest fan, former son-in-law and neighbor (he livednext door to Johnny and June for a while) Marty Stuart. The other three, as well as captions are by Scott B. Bomar (check out Bomar’s 100+ songwriters’ podcast – songcraftshow.com). There is one each on the two prison concert dates (the first 100 pages – of the 144-page book - are on the Folsom gig) and one on the iconic “flipping the bird†photo. (I won’t reveal the true story behind that one; you’ll have to read it yourself.Marshall preferred to shoot in Black-and-white but there are some color images here too. While the B&W ones are real sharp and crisp, the color ones are somewhat muted. But it’s what’s in the image that counts. There are captions to about half the photos, while others do not identify the person. Cash is obvious as are the Statler Brothers, June Carter and Mother Maybelle, but I was curious about a few others.Of course, the obvious way to appreciate this book is to read the text on first pass-through and then put on a Cash record (preferably one of the two concert records) and spend time with each picture. In September, while at the 27th Americana Music Conference in Nashville, I had the privilege to attend an hour-long panel on the book featuring Bomar, Davis and Cash’s son John Carter Cash). It was enlightening. I was able to capture Bomar’s comments re: the images and am adding it to this review.Whether you are a Cash fan or a Marshall fan (I’m both), you’ll this book.I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.Steve Ramm“Anything Phonographicâ€
