The Spectrum Series has been a really excellent resource for helping my son improve his math grades and allowing him to retain what he learns.7th grade is where math starts to get a bit more abstract, but also more practical than simple adding and subtraction. This is where you learn about ratios, angles, volume and statistics, the skills you actually use in real life. Each chapter is broken down into short lessons, each of which focuses on a specific math skill. Helpfully clear examples show how to perform the calculation, diagram or graphing, so you not only learn how to solve the questions, but how to show your work, which is a very important part of math testing in school.There are only a few examples per page, so it isn’t so overwhelming. But there are a lot of pages! So cumulatively it is a challenge, but most importantly, it gives you enough material to facilitate practice. As with any skill, it is practice that turns a learned knowledge into an automatic skill. Learning at school would quickly dissipate without putting it through a few repetitions.I personally sat with my son on some of the sections he found difficult, or that he hadn’t covered in class yet, and I actually relearned things I had forgotten from long ago. And I was able to point out some things about math that made it so amazing. But a typical child in, or just about to enter, 7th grade should be able to do these exercises without adult help, though of course things may go faster if someone is there to help explain.There are only a few examples per page, so it isn’t so overwhelming. But there are a lot of pages, so cumulatively it is a challenge. Most importantly, it gives your child enough material to allow them to get in a good amount of practice. As with any skill, it is practice that turns a learned knowledge into an automatic skill. There is a test in the middle of the book to assess what they've learned, and one at the end. The answers to everything are at the end of the book, so depending on how you're using the workbook, you may want to cut those out before you start.Hint to parents with middle schoolers who seem more interested in video gaming than geometry (which is ALL of them), I found that completing a set number of pages in the Spectrum books was a good way to allow your child to earn screen time.

These questions aren't as challenging as I was hoping they would be. Also there are only about two questions per 'lesson'. I was looking forward to using this with my advanced classes, but I don't think I'll be able to do that.

Great help for struggling math students

By way of background, I want to tell you a little about what led our family to Spectrum math review workbooks. We had always been concerned about our children falling behind in math during the summer, but we couldn’t bring ourselves to enroll them into academic math classes. They work so hard during the school year that we really want to give them a break from class work during their vacation. So we tried getting them memberships on those online math review sites where the kids get rewarded with badges for completing various levels of math work. The problem was that those sites had so many questions (sometimes 50 - 100) that our kids got too bored or tired and stopped using them entirely. We also tried other math workbooks from other publishers, but they were often geared towards test prep and didn’t have clear explanations.We started using Spectrum math workbooks last summer and found them approachable, and our children had less trouble using their system. If you just open the Spectrum Critical Thinking for Math, Grade 7, you can see why. The font size is large and easy to read, the diagrams are clear, and the explanations about each topic (complete with examples) are helpful. The material in the book is aligned to the current grade 7 state standards and broadly covers the work my 7th grader had this past school year. There are also a manageable number of questions in each section so my child doesn’t feel burned out trying to finish. Best of all, there is an answer key section at the back of the book that provides step-by-step solutions to the problems which makes checking work easy. This Spectrum Grade 7 Math workbook, like the other Spectrum math books we’ve tried, really helps my 7th grader retain math skills and refreshes the concepts in an understandable manner. I’ve already ordered the 8th grade book.

I've used other Spectrum math books with my elementary school children. This book plays to Spectrum's strengths in organizing and formatting. This way users gets to know their respective strengths, what they have yet to learn to meet the standards, and areas where they need more practice.The content is all about extending math knowledge from the curriculum of earlier grades. In other words, everything gets more complex in terms of the number of steps to solve a problem, the level of analysis required to solve real-world problems using rational numbers, the use of conversions to solve measurement problems including in geometry, and some investigations into probability models.My impression based on my experience with this book is that most students but not all will require a lot of additional practice with supplemental books that have more problem sets. Spectrum also publishes books that provide that, and so one must bear in mind that this book is a high-level critical thinking guide. I can see though that this book has its place as both a diagnostic tool with its midterm and final exams, and valuable lessons that get right to the point in ways that are clear and understandable.Again, it's the organization and formatting of content that makes this book so good. I didn't see any errors or typos; it's a well-edited book.
