I used to think that these tales are remnants of less sophisticated times and places. Having examined deeper some of them, with a group of well-qualified and diligent friends, I conclude that they contain patterns of life on a much deeper level than we normally notice, being busy to run away from difficulties and greedy for happines.E.g. "The Hermit" of this collection has an eerie resemblance to the stages of my own life, as I changed from one personality to the next, under the pressure of outside circumstances, as if my old self has died and a new one appeared from the ashes, finally to realize how things really work in the final scene.This contention is no more fantastic than any other idea of new understanding or a new invention -before they were actualized, they looked stupid and improbable to everybody, except the one who believed that they are possible. Would anybody treat the possibilty of the Internet as plausible just a few decades ago?Can it be that all knowledge exists around us and we just need to remove filters which present the veil, prevent us from seeing?Don't be decived by the symbols in these tales, try to think about the characters as various personalities of your own mind, as in the "Multimind" by Dr. Robert Ornstein. The personages, the plots are simply used as a basket which saved the baby Moses from drowning. Perhaps the best collection of fairy-stories I've come across. The quality of the retellings are a little uneven, but the story selections themselves are excellent, and the illustrations are all very engaging.

Everyone in the office has taken it to read some of the stories. They are mostly old fables and such

I learned to read on a story called "The Hawk and the Nightingale" inside this book. My family would read these stories aloud, and each of us would take a turn. I picked the shortest tale to start with. The magical illustrations of the out-of-print hardbound copy not only enriched my love of reading and writing, but still weave their way into my dreams today. I need to find the hardbound version, so I can teach my neices and nephews the magic of literacy.
